Bitterroot
Lewisia rediviva Adopted in 1895. Long before explorers Lewis and Clark wrote about the beautiful purplish-pink flower of the bitterroot, Native Americans were using its roots for food and trade. Tribes dug up the roots and dried them so they could be kept and used for months. The root was too bitter to eat unless it was cooked, and it was usually mixed with berries or meat. An Indian story tells how the bitterroot came to be. It says the sun heard a mother crying because she couldn't find food for her family. The sun changed her tears into the bitterroot so she would always have food for her children. You can find the bitterroot growing near the mountains and boulders of western Montana in spring and summer. Mice love its leaves and seeds.

Landscape Geography
From our Autumn 1999 Bugnet issue: Landscape As Seen By Geographers
by Jeffrey A. Gritzner Early in the twentieth century, disagreement regarding the content of geography was so great that three distinct fields of inquiry were designated as geography: (i) the study of the earth as the medium of physical processes; (ii) the study of life forms as subject to their physical environment; and (iii) the study of the area or habitat differentiation of the earth. Historically, geography’s emphasis was upon landscape, and this emphasis has again become a unifying force in the discipline. Geography assumes responsibility for the study of landscape because there exists a common curiosity about that subject, and because it is a realm of reality claimed by no other discipline. While other disciplines may concern themselves with area phenomena, they are avowedly using geographical facts for their own ends. The synthetic area tradition in geography is deeply rooted. It is variously reflected in prehistoric and historical exploration; early efforts in cartography; and, of course, in the Greek term geographia reference to area knowledge. The emphasis is similarly reflected in the German terms Landschaftskunde or Lunderkunde the knowledge of landscapes or lands.

State Fair Sherree G. Age:10 Daniel F. Age:10 My state is Montana. Montana is located in the west part of the United States. Montana's nickname is "The Treasure State" because people found lots of gold, silver, and minerals. Montana's flag has the state seal of Montana. On the state seal is a pick, plow, and shovel. That represents the mineral industries. Montana is also the 5th biggest state in the USA. Helena is the capital of Montana. Nancy S. Age:10 Mississippi became a state on December 15, 1817 and it was the 20th state. I hope you learned a lot about Mississippi. Raquel L. Age: 10 My state is Iowa. I made a product map. A product map shows products. The main products are corn and hogs. I made a pig farm because the eastern side of Iowa has a lot of farms. My project cube shows Iowa's famous people. It told their name, birth date, and a fact about them. There was Herbert Hoover who was the 31st president, born in West Branch. Henry Wallace was a poet and teacher. Jaylyn W. Age: 10

Cities As Ecosystems
From our Autumn 1999 Bugnet issue:
Cities As Ecosystems? They are excited by the potential variety of learning experiences, and the real-life relevance of learning based in urban students’ own neighborhoods. Some educators believe that urban ecosystem education is a potential model for education reform, bringing interdisciplinary learning, standards of excellence and equity of quality to otherwise lagging city schools. Such was the crux of the discussions at the Cary Conference, held in April, at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES) in Millbrook, NY. The conference brought together worldwide leaders in the biological, physical and social dimensions of urban ecosystem research with top education researchers, administrators and teachers. Those in attendance included key representatives from the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation, National Research Council, National Science Foundation, NASA, UNESCO, U. S. Department of Education and U. S. Forest Service, plus leading teachers and administrators from Los Angeles, Chicago and other major urban areas. The Cary Conference is only one example of the new trend in urban ecosystem research and education. The National Science Foundation (NSF), a leading federal agency funding environmental research, recently added the first two urban programs (Baltimore and Phoenix) to its Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) effort, which is an extraordinary commitment to the focused study of ecological change over time.
