National Association of State Boards of Education Montana's Efforts in Collaborative Actions State boards and state departments of education are frequently encouraged to collaborate with local districts and other key education and youth-serving constituencies as they work to improve teaching and learning in their states. But while many organizations are similar in terms of their vision, goals, and overall mission, collaboration is often easier said than done. Indeed, the difficulties of trying to work with a host of organizations and agencies that have different structures, styles, and needs have been described by one observer as being akin to "dancing with an octopus." Montana, however, has been working to redefine collaboration with respect to its focus on education. A significant factor in its collaborative efforts has been, according to state officials, Montana's rural character as a state with a population not yet a million, but inhabiting a land area covering over 200,000 square miles. These demographics of a widely dispersed population, along with statewide efforts to link education and the state's economic prosperity, have led to the unique approach Montana uses in its collaborative involvement at the local level and in the management of the state's school districts. Following are some of the collaborative efforts that can be found across the state. Education Community Efforts Montana has been very successful in its efforts to get its community of educators involved in statewide education issues. For example, as a result of its

About the CSRD Program What is comprehensive school reform? Comprehensive school reform is a means to improve student achievement through reorganizing and revitalizing entire schools, rather than implementing isolated programs. It uses well-researched and well-documented models for schoolwide change that are supported by expert trainers and facilitators. Challenging academic standards, strong professional development, and meaningful parent and community support are all part of a comprehensive school reform program. What is the CSRD Program? The Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) program is part of the FY1998 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Act. Sponsored by Congressmen David R. Obey (WI) and John E. Porter (IL), the CSRD Program provides funding to help schools adopt effective, research-based comprehensive school reform models that will help all students reach high standards. The program makes funds available to state education agencies to provide competitive incentive grants to districts for schools pursuing comprehensive reform. Of these funds, a significant portion is earmarked for Title I schools and the remaining funds may go to any school under the Fund for the Improvement of Education. Nationwide, up to 3,000 schools may be eligible for grants of no less than $50,000 (renewable for two years).

Montana Historical Society - Youth Discover the Lewis and Clark Expedition Youth Discover the Lewis and Clark Expedition , an exhibit featuring artworks of K-12 school children from across the state. Students will complete the works of art 2D, 3D, and mixed media, during the 2002-203 school year. Works will be submitted as 33mm slides and accompanied by a brief description of the work. Grant monies will be available through the Society to provide teachers with funding for art supplies and research materials. The deadline for teachers to apply to MHS is May 15, 2002. For a complete description of the proposal, click on Exhibit Proposal Recreational Trails funds can be used for all types of trails, including non-motorized, motorized, multiple use, community, rural and backcountry. Special projects can include trails education and information brochures, interpretive signs and materials and noxious weed control on trails. Public agencies and private trail clubs are eligible to receive money from this program. In late 2002, FWP provided $870,000 to 56 trails projects. FWP also provides advice and assistance with trail design and management.
