Probably the best known general Napoleonic work of this century, Chandler's book is a good overview of the Napoleonic period. Serious readers inevitably note a number of glaring errors, but these are commonly due to mistakes "imported" from earlier secondary works, many of which were apparently consulted for this volume. Overall though, it remains a very good reference work.

    Napoleonic History
The Napoleon Options: Alternate Decisions of the Napoleonic Wars , edited by Jonathan North. This is a collection of essays by noted historians making suppositions about what might have happened during the Napoleonic wars had things been slightly different. What if the Russians had heavily outflanked the French at Borodino? What if Wellington had not been in command at Vimiero? What if Nelson had not found the French fleet at the Nile? These alternate histories shed a light on what might have been. 1815 The Waterloo Campaign : Wellington, His German Allies and the Battles of Ligny and Quatre Bras , by Peter Hofschroer. This is an excellent reassesment of the final hundred days leading up to the battle of Waterloo. Contains 16 pages of b/w photos and 36 maps. Previously unpublished eyewitness accounts and battle reports German, British, and Dutch archive material published for the first time. Mind of Napoleon : A selection of His Written and Spoken Words edited by J Christopher Herold is a good place to learn about Napoleon and what he thought. 1812: Napoleon in Moscow , by Britten Paul Austin is a good description of Napoleon and the turning point in the campaign that became the seed of his eventual downfall.

Napoleon turned on the allies and crushed them in one of history's greatest campaigns. The following year, he met the legendary army of Frederick the Great and annihilated it completely. The year after it was Russia's turn again, and though the northern winter was the major foe, it could not save the Tsar. The world, and warfare, would never be the same again. The Empires of Russia, Austria, Prussia and Britain were not weak. How had Napoleon done this? Why were his methods, and his army, different?
