Using Literature To Teach Geography in High Schools. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Traditionally, the high school curriculum has been rigidly compartmentalized. Yet, linkages between disciplines in the curriculum increasingly are being made, such as the connections of English to U.S. History courses in many high schools. Another connection may be English with World Geography courses. Students of every ability level could benefit from exploring the interrelationship between these two disciplines. In this ERIC Digest, the term literature refers to novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and folk tales. It consists of narrative as opposed to expository forms of writing that are found in traditional textbooks, reference books, and news articles. By no means, however, should literature be the sole tool used to teach geography or other subjects of the social studies. Rather, each form of narrative and expository writing has its place in the social studies curriculum.

Welcome to Cashmere High School 2003
I am pleased to introduce you to Cashmere High School and to present an outline of the school through this prospectus. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss what we can offer your son or daughter at our school.
Cashmere High School looks out onto two large playing fields. Our vision is described by the words Leading Learning. Supporting this vision are four values: Opportunities, Vibrancy, Citizenship and Excellence. Many exciting and vibrant opportunities are provided to our students, both in and beyond the classroom. With an emphasis placed on good citizenship, our expectation is that all of our students will strive to achieve personal excellence. This occurs in a school which is both a leading learning institution, and a place where an emphasis is placed on leading our students in their learning. The individual learning needs of our students are our first priority.
In partnership with parents, we play a part in the growth of our students into mature and well-adjusted young adults. This occurs in a school which has structure and boundaries, but also allows its students to express their individual personalities.

Interpretation and education play an important role in conveying the significance of our national parks. Because national parks belong to all of us, we have a responsibility to protect them for future generations. Understanding their importance to our natural and cultural world is the first step toward preservation. The " Parks As Classrooms " page highlights the many educational programs and curricula supported and/or produced by the National Park Service. While this page may be of parti cular interest to students and teachers, our interpretive and educational programs should appeal to anyone interested in learning more about America's cultural and natural treasures. Imagine reading "The Raven" in Edgar Allan Poe's House or learning about the Executive Branch of the government at the White House . Picture yourself learning or teaching natural science in the Everglades or Yellowstone or in urban natural areas in San Francisco or New York City. See history come alive at Gettysburg or Valley Forge . No matter what the subject art, science, history, social studies, even math and physical education, the subject is probably easier to teach and learn when you are there. Parks as Classrooms (PAC) programs and materials provide on- and off-site learning opportunities.

    The Future of Educational Research
Professor Ted Wragg, Exeter University, England The time has come for a sea change in the nature and focus of educational research in the United Kingdom, for the dawn of the 21st century has seen its agenda seized by a strong central political drive. Whereas research in the mid to late 20th century addressed issues which could be described as 'pure' or 'applied', the direction and purpose of the last fifteen years have been dominated by government policies. This political imperative could, of course, be regarded as highly desirable. After all, politicians are elected by the people on the basis of published policies, so what is wrong with the research community spending much of its time and energy investigating the efficacy of these? On the surface it seems like a healthily democratic process. Beneath the surface, however, lurk countless pitfalls for the unwary. Consider the focus of educational research during the last fifty years. The 1950s and 1960s were decades during which fundamental relationships were explored. Excited by the attractiveness and apparent exactitude of correlations to four decimal points, investigators sought links between such factors as intelligence, personality and social background with achievement in school. The 1967 Plowden Report on primary education was typical of this desire to find causes that could in turn influence practice, with two substantial studies by Stephen Wiseman and Gilbert Peaker of the influence of home background on children's learning.
