"As long as she is young and personable, every woman may cherish the dream that she may leap up the social ladder and dim the sheen of luxury by sheer natural loveliness; the few examples of such a feat are kept before the eye of the public." July 19-20, 1848: The world's first women's rights convention is held in Seneca Falls, New York setting the agenda for the women's rights movement that followed. Quaker physicians establish the Female (later Woman's) Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to give women a chance to learn medicine. Due to threats against them, the first women graduated under police guard. 14th Amendment is passed by Congress (ratified by the states in 1868), the first time "citizens" and "voters" are defined as "male" in the Constitution. For the first and only time in this century, the U.S. Senate votes on woman suffrage. It loses, 34 to 16. 25 Senators do not bother to participate.

Celebrate! Holidays in the USA: Thanksgiving National Celebrations (Portrait of America) Outline of American History Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November, but many Americans take a day of vacation on the following Friday to make a four-day weekend, during which they may travel long distances to visit family and friends. The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their dissenting religion without interference. After a rough winter, in which about half of them died, they turned for help to neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast. The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition not only because so many other Americans have found prosperity but also because the Pilgrims' sacrifices for their freedom still captivate the imagination.

The Center, holding 35,000 cubic feet of records, was designed around National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) specifications. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) holds Red Cross organizational records, dating from 1881 to recent decades. Groups of archival documents, processed and indexed at the Braugh Center, are given to NARA under a permanent deed of gift. In addition, a collection of still photographs from the early years of the American Red Cross, including the World War I era, belongs to the Library of Congress . More recent historical photographs are housed at the Braugh Center or held in the Photography Section of the American Red Cross National Headquarters, which can be reached through Imagenet in Crossnet.

Black History Month / African American Section
Black History Month was established in 1926. Although there is an international aspect to Black History month, it is mainly an American holiday. In 1926, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson and other African American and white scholars, launched "Negro History Week" so that Americans could reflect on the history and contributions of African Americans. In the 1970s, the celebration of African American history was expanded to include the entire month of February. Black History Month should not be confused with a national holiday for African countries. African countries have their own national holidays at various times throughout the year. For example, Kenya's national holiday is on December 12th.

The Civil Rights Movement and Protests
In the early sixties I was a child growing up and hearing the news reports of protests and literacy test to vote and violations of "white only" facilities. I never fully appreciated the freedoms that were afforded to me and my parents but denied to other children and their parents. It just did not make sense. Today we hear terms like affirmative action and such. My hope is one day we will all be people, with no need to identify race, color or creed ... just to say each person is unique. Timeline of the American Civil Rights Movement , by students at Western Michigan University's Department of Political Science.
