Activities to Celebrate Native American Heritage!
November is National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. Education World offers 12 lessons to help students learn about Native American history and cultures. Included: Activities that involve students in dramatizing folktales, learning new words, preparing traditional foods, and much more! How did National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month get started? A brief time line illustrates some of the key events on the way to that designation:
  • At the turn of the 20th century, people began making proposals for a day to honor Native Americans.
  • In 1914, Red Fox James, a member of the Blackfoot tribe, rode horseback from state to state in the hope of gaining support for a day of tribute.
  • The following year, Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a member of the Seneca tribe, persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to designate a day of recognition for Native Americans.
  • New York was the first state to observe American Indian Day in 1916. Over the years, other states followed suit in designating a day to honor Native Americans.

American Holidays is an introductory survey of the historical and social background of American holidays.
People in every culture celebrate holidays. Although the word "holiday" literally means "holy day," most American holidays are not religious, but commemorative in nature and origin. Because the nation is blessed with rich ethnic heritage it is possible to trace some of the American holidays to diverse cultural sources and traditions, but all holidays have taken on a distinctively American flavor. In the United States, the word "holiday" is synonymous with "celebration! " In the strict sense, there are no federal (national) holidays in the United States. Each of the 50 states has jurisdiction over its holidays. In practice, however, most states observe the federal ("legal or public ") holidays, even though the President and Congress can legally designate holidays only for federal government employees.

  • Americans and Americans of German descent will celebrate the thirteenth anniversary of German American Day on October 6, 1999. A debt of gratitude is owed to Dr. Eberhard and Dr. Ruth Reichmann of Indiana, whose vision gave birth of the idea of a special holiday for the GermanAmericans, and to Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, President of the Society of German American Studies. Their friendship with Indiana Senator Lugar, and co-sponsorship by Senator Riegle and Congressmen Foley (later Speaker of the House), Hamilton and Luken were instrumental in securing the joint congressional resolutions which officially established the day. Thanks must also go to the many D.A.N.K. chapters, their members, the United German American Committee of the U.S.A., Inc., the Steuben Society of America, German-American organizations, entities and members nationwide for their continued successful work, which has secured our annual German American Day. The German American National Congress (D.A.N.K.) and it's chapters mounted the first national campaign in 1987 urging all GermanAmericans, their organizations and friends, to write or phone their senators and congressmen, and ask them to vote for the Joint Congressional Resolution establishing German American Day. Altogether, D.A.N.K. alone effected about 18,000+ mailings, in addition to the thousands of telephone calls and personal contacts. Then the U.S. Congress passed the resolution August 18, 1987.

As proclaimed by President George W. Bush on November 1, 2002, this month is National American Indian Heritage Month. Activities and programs all month long will highlight the roles of American Indians and Alaska Natives and their part in our nations’ history. With the construction of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, comes the chance to educate all Americans about their culture. This month serves as a much needed reminder to recognize the efforts, and most importantly the struggles, of Native Americans to find comfort in a society whose beliefs severely contrast their own.
Regardless of the how and why, it still stands that people like Sakajawea and her contribution to the ‘Voyage of Discovery’ led by Lewis and Clark, and the Navajo Code talkers who helped our nation and the allies secure a victory in World War II, were remarkable in their efforts. Our government is working to maintain the legacy of American Indians and Alaska Natives by preserving irreplaceable languages, cultural traditions, and continuing to honor tribal sovereignty. During the month of November, there will be several programs celebrating the Native American culture. Join in and learn something new about an antiquated society.

Preaching nonviolence, much in the same way as had Mahatma Gandhi of India, Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke and campaigned tirelessly to rid the United States of traditions and laws that forced on black Americans the status of second-class citizens. Among these laws were those in some states which required black people to take back seats in buses or which obstructed voting by blacks. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, African Americans, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., used boycotts, marches, and other forms of nonviolent protest to demand equal treatment under the law and an end to racial prejudice. A high point of this civil rights movement came on August 28, 1963, when more than 200,000 people of all races gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to hear King say: "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveholders will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood....I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

    Introduction
The ending of World War I at 11:00 am, November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month) was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, as Armistice Day. This federal holiday was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson to commemorate the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed an act of Congress which proclaimed November 11 as Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. Veterans Day was celebrated on the 4th Monday in October from 1971 through 1977 and was restored to its original date of November 11 by President Gerald Ford. The United Kingdom observes November 11 as Remembrance Day and in France it is called Armistice Day.

After the attack on the United States on September 11th, many Americans have turned to the symbol for national unity, the American flag. American flag resources are provided below. Further, President Bush has indicated that the United States is in a state of war and that not only those who participated in the September 11th attack, but those who have harbored them, will be held responsible. In addition, administration officials have indicated that the war will be long term since the goal will be to build an international coalition of governments to join together to put an end to all terrorist groups in the world. Given a state of war with all terrorist groups, citizens of the USA can reasonably expect that the attack on September 11th was not the end of attempts to hurt American citizens, buildings, or institutions. May a new sense of unity not end with September 11th. May it be our honor to care for the many in great need. May it also be our honor to look beyond September 11th to serve and protect those in our own communities.
