L II Alexander Helios, Inc. Contains Historical Facts only. Native American Language Families and Tribes Dedicated to the memory of ShupeShe MCMXCVI Preface The following Linguistic Guide to the Native American Language Families was created as a definitive, quick reference to the Language Stocks of the Native Americans. Every effort has been made to complete the work as accurately and simple as possible. Information contained herein begins from the early 1800's up to the most recent data available today. Therefore, many tribes are listed by their 'classical' names first, then are followed by their 'traditional' names and sometimes vice-versa. Occasionally, you will see tribes listed in more than one catagory which is to be expected because many tribes migrated into new areas at different times. The tribes listed here were scattered mostly over the North American Continent, however, the list does contain the northern Rim of Mexico, the Caribbean, Bahamas and up to Greenland then across the continent into Northeastern China. It is the compiler's desire that this work be educational as well as entertaining for all who study it.

Native American languages It is not possible to determine exactly how many languages were spoken in the New World before the arrival of Europeans or how many people spoke these languages. Some scholars estimate that the Western Hemisphere at the time of the first European contact was inhabited by 40 million people who spoke 1,800 different tongues. Another widely accepted estimate suggests that at the time of Columbus more than 15 million speakers throughout the Western Hemisphere used more than 2,000 languages; the geographic divisions within that estimate are 300 separate tongues native to some 1.5 million Native Americans N of Mexico, 300 different languages spoken by roughly 5 million people in Mexico and Central America, and more than 1,400 distinct tongues used by 9 million Native Americans in South America and the West Indies.

Language Crisis Native American Crisis International Crisis Native American Language Crisis
April 1997 According to Native American community language practitioners, linguists, and other experts in the field, the international crisis of culture loss affects the United States and the Americas and islands as much as any region globally. Of the estimated original 20,000,000 Native American inhabitants of the North American continent at the onset of European colonial invasion, some 2,000,000 remain. Of the all the original tribal groups and 300 languages, some 588 tribal groups and 175 living languages remain. Of these languages, many are spoken by very few, mostly elders or adults. Of the 175 listed, 125 are spoken by middle aged or older adults, and of those, 55 are spoken by only 1 to 6 people. Only 20 of all of the remaining languages are spoken widely by children. In addition to this, by the year 2000, 55 of these languages will disappear forever. In another fifty years, 100 more will vanish. Without change or significant commitment and support, only 20 of all of these languages, of the 300 original, or 175 existing, will survive the next 60 years. The loss is noticed most among the young, the children who, even though they may hear the language at home, are increasingly drawn into the modern age of television, videos and main-stream English media. According to veteran Native American Linguist Ofelia Zepeda, it takes one year for one person dedicated to reviving a language working from within the commu-nity to start to see a change.
