Native American Literature: A Catalog
Strength of the Collection
Although citations are not strictly subdivided in the catalog, I have categorized the searched items as monographs, anthologies, and periodical issues. (Anthologies and periodical issues may be listed because the entire item is devoted to Native American literature or because work by a particular Native American author is included in it.) Thirty entirely devoted to Native American literature were searched. Of these, the Libraries owns twenty-three, or . Three additional anthologies containing work by one Native American author were checked; of these, one is owned ( A total of 261 monographs were searched. Of these, the Libraries owns 209 ( ). An additional two books were owned at one time but are now lost. In general, the unowned items are more likely than not to have been published prior to 1980 and to be non-literary in nature. The unowned literary works are sometimes the first book by the writer, typically not widely reviewed and published in a small print run; published by a small press (even self- published); published in Canada; and/or are by relatively minor authors. Of eight periodical issues checked that contain literary works, the Libraries owns six (

Native American Literature Eastern Michigan University Dr. Lori Burlingame Gaylord 2003 Office: 612 P Pray-Harrold Literature 204 Office Hours for Winter Semester: Native American Literature e-mail: lori.burlingame@emich.edu Course Description This course is designed to be an introduction to both "traditional" Native American stories and contemporary Native American fiction and poetry; the emphasis will, however, be weighted more heavily on twentieth century Native American writings. As important as literary and ethnographic analysis of a text is, it is just as fundamental to experience what we read as it is connected to our individual lives and realities, and I hope that you will take from this course a sense of the ways in which the literature that we read speaks to you and enriches your view of the world. As a class, we will all be on a journey of growth and discovery. Our class meetings will be a combination of lecture and discussion. I encourage you to ask questions, to speak your minds, and to actively engage with class readings and topics; I want to know what you think about and how you interpret the literature that we read. Texts Note: All texts are available at the McKenny bookstore; the course pack should be pre-ordered as soon as possible from Huron Valley Publishing by calling 1-800-774-6801. Ask for the Literature 204: Gaylord course pack for Dr. Burlingame's class. It is also imperative that you read the majority of the texts before coming to Gaylord; if you do not do this, you will have a difficult time passing this course. Our schedule is rigorous, and you will not have much time for reading outside of class.

Back to Main Page "Native American Literature" - that means two totally different things:
  • Literature BY Native Americans
  • Literature ABOUT Native Americans.
  • Unfortunately, there are still many, many more of the latter than of the former. Fortunately, however, there have been more and more publications by Native American authors in recent years. Fiction, poetry, non-fiction - all genres are represented.
On these pages, both categories will be presented.
As a start, we refer you to the extensive reviews of books on the subject of Native Americans used in preschools and elementary schools in Germany. These reviews (so far, only in German!) can be found under "Educational Issues" ("Bildung" in German).
In the near future, there will be separate book reviews here on German and English language books. Unfortunately, many good books, especially modern literature by Native Americans, have not been translated into German yet. Native Americans
This article by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in the Library Corner column of Teaching K-8 Magazine The study of Native American people and their cultures is a challenge because of the stereotypes that exist, not only in the literature, but in our own minds and in those of the children we teach. Not long ago I was working with children in a school on the east coast and told them I had just come from working with Indian children in North Dakota. They were sure I was telling another story since, they said, "There aren't any more Indians. We killed them all." Hard to believe such things in today's world of television and world wide communication, but I'm sure these children were not unique in their ignorance. Many studies of Indians leave students convinced that all Indians lived in tepees then and still do or that they were all wiped out, not that our ancestors didn't try.
