NATIVE GIS GIS are G eographical I nformation S ystems, where maps are used as windows to organize and examine data of various kinds that relate to location, to places. Canadian cartography grad student collects some basic explanations of GIS and what some tribes are doing (mostly finding out they can't afford it; been seeing the wrong consultants!) GIS is what I'm doing in a small way here. Best current example of how an info-magagement GIS works will be found in MINNESOTA. (1/23).
  • What is GIS? ESRI, an engineering-consulting firm that specializes in GIS, provides the full scoop. ESRI has about 20 tribal customers, including the Navajo Nation. GIS is expensive, but they'll also help a Native Nation get started with grants of the (very expensive) ArcInfo software, training scholarships and extensive help and if need be, a Big Mac and the special scanner needed for the biggest effort, which is the time and efforts required to digitize the local data for a real GIS. A good way for tribes to get started may be through conservation management, using the easier (and much cheaper!) ArcView. ESRI has a conservation program offering get-started grants and training, that they'd like to see more Native Nations and Indian environmental groups get involved in.

The Native American History Archive (NAHA)
Created in 1995 by Institute for Learning Technologies staff member Richard Calton, the Native American History Archive (NAHA) was an important early experiment in designing an online educational portal devoted to Native American resources for the use of K-12 teachers and students. However, because it has been many years since the site was updated and improved, we have elected to remove NAHA from ILT Web.
For information on online resources concerning Native Americans we recommend that you visit: NativeWeb: Resources for Indigenous Cultures Around the World Developed by a group of historians, independent scholars, and activists, NativeWeb offers a gateway to more than 4,000 historical and contemporary resources relating to over 250 separate nations. http://www.nativeweb.org
Richard Calton is now directing HarlemLive ( http://www.harlemlive.org ), ILT's award-winning online youth magazine. Visit our Homepage to find out more about the Institute for Learning Technologies ( http://www.ilt.columbia.edu

Native American Territories
At certain periods during the Pleistocene epoch, the temperatures turned cold enough to freeze much of the earth's water into ice. The sea level dropped as much as 90 m (300 ft) and the shallow Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia became a natural land bridge on which grazing animals, and the humans who stalked them, passed. Most anthropologists believe that Native Americans descend from Asian peoples who moved into North America by way of this land bridge.

Native Americans
This article by Carol Otis Hurst first appeared in the Library Corner column of Teaching K-8 Magazine The study of Native American people and their cultures is a challenge because of the stereotypes that exist, not only in the literature, but in our own minds and in those of the children we teach. Not long ago I was working with children in a school on the east coast and told them I had just come from working with Indian children in North Dakota. They were sure I was telling another story since, they said, "There aren't any more Indians. We killed them all." Hard to believe such things in today's world of television and world wide communication, but I'm sure these children were not unique in their ignorance. Many studies of Indians leave students convinced that all Indians lived in tepees then and still do or that they were all wiped out, not that our ancestors didn't try.

American Indian Today - BIA FAQ The American Indian and Alaska Native Population: 2000 (Census Bureau) Contemporary U.S. Literature: Multicultural Perspectives (Electronic Journal) Native American Literature: Remembrance Renewal Outline of American History Portrait of America We, the American Indians (Census Bureau) The first American immigrants, beginning more than 20,000 years ago, were intercontinental wanderers: hunters and their families following animal herds from Asia to America, across a land bridge where the Bering Strait is today. When Spain's Christopher Columbus "discovered" the New World in 1492, about 1.5 million Native Americans lived in what is now the continental United States, although estimates of the number vary greatly. Mistaking the place where he landed San Salvador in the Bahamas for the Indies, Columbus called the Native Americans "Indians."
During the next 200 years, people from several European countries followed Columbus across the Atlantic Ocean to explore America and set up trading posts and colonies. Native Americans suffered greatly from the influx of Europeans. The transfer of land from Indian to European and later American hands was accomplished through treaties, wars, and coercion, with Indians constantly giving way as the newcomers moved west. In the 19th century, the government's preferred solution to the Indian "problem" was to force tribes to inhabit specific plots of land called reservations. Some tribes fought to keep from giving up land they had traditionally used. In many cases the reservation land was of poor quality, and Indians came to depend on government assistance. Poverty and joblessness among Native Americans still exist today.

Welcome to the Native American webpage at the West Nyack Free Library. This page has been developed to serve the needs of students and the general public within the Ramapo Catskill Library System; however, everyone is welcome. It is my goal to present a vast array of sites that cover all aspects of Native American life, both past and present, with particular attention given to official tribal pages and sites that have received awards for quality and design.
Please be aware that the sites and titles provided here represent only a small amount of the available information on Native Americans. Besides the Internet, there is a vast array of books, articles, and audio visual materials available concerning Native Americans. Please visit the library for assistance throughout your research process. Finally, if you have any questions or comments concerning this page, please send your email to me, Susan Jacobs , at the West Nyack Free Library. Thank you for visiting.
