Consequently, states adopted uniform minimum water quality standards, monitored by the newly-created EPA. Today, reduced toxic flows have lowered fish kills allowing lakes and rivers to revive. In several large household probability samples we (together with colleagues) have found that approximately one-third of adults report exposure to a natural disaster during their life span (2,3). In addition, recent events confirm the potential impact of various natural disasters (e.g., the Great Midwest floods of '93; the Southern California fires of '93, Hurricanes Andrew '92, Iniki '92, and Hugo '89; the Oakland Hills fire '91, and the Loma Prieta earthquake '89). Our personal and professional backgrounds provide us with insights concerning the mental health impact of natural disasters. On a personal level, we both lived in Charleston, South Carolina in September, 1989 when Hurricane Hugo devastated the area. We understand first hand what it is like to prepare for, survive, and clean up following a major natural disaster. On a professional level, we are part of a clinical research team that specializes in studying the mental health impact of various natural disasters. Most interesting was the description of how a medical examiner makes the determination that heat is the cause of death. The article describes it thus: quote: For each heat-related death, he said, the medical examiner must confirm one of three factors: a body temperature of 105 degrees or more, a high environmental temperature at the death scene, or decomposition in a body seen alive just before the heat wave. The high body temperature makes sense if it assessed at or near the time of death but not any significant time thereafter. The other factors don't really seem to make any sense at all and appears to be mere speculation. Anyway, another matter of interest was what the reporter failed to mention, and something to which the JSHP hinted at in the commentary below the link: The much high incidence of cold-related deaths. I wanted to ask the reporter but couldn’t find the email addy so I wrote the science editor instead.

Existential Risks Analyzing Human Extinction Scenarios and Related Hazards Nick Bostrom Department of Philosophy Yale University New Haven, CT 06520 ABSTRACT Because of accelerating technological progress, humankind may be rapidly approaching a critical phase in its career. In addition to well-known threats such as nuclear holocaust, the prospects of radically transforming technologies like nanotech systems and machine intelligence present us with unprecedented opportunities and risks. Our future, and whether we will have a future at all, may well be determined by how we deal with these challenges. In the case of radically transforming technologies, a better understanding of the transition dynamics from a human to a “posthuman” society is needed. Of particular importance is to know where the pitfalls are: the ways in which things could go terminally wrong. While we have had long exposure to various personal, local, and endurable global hazards, this paper analyzes a recently emerging category: that of existential risks . These are threats that could cause our extinction or destroy the potential of Earth-originating intelligent life. Some of these threats are relatively well known while others, including some of the gravest, have gone almost unrecognized. Existential risks have a cluster of features that make ordinary risk management ineffective. A final section of this paper discusses several ethical and policy implications. A clearer understanding of the threat picture will enable us to formulate better strategies.
