Shipping has its own tradition and practices. Names like bosun, AB, OS, Greaser, Oiler, Lecky, Spark, Mate, GP, are some of the titles given to certain personnel on board a ship. Parts of a ship like bow, stern, starboard, port, bridge, telegraph, aft peak tank, double bottom, shaft tunnel, stern tube, and many others are common on board a ship, but hardly heard of on the land.
Marine Engineering became a profession at the dawn of the engine driven ship. The basic concepts of propulsion has remained pretty much the same, but there were many improvement since then. Many of the marine disaster like the sinking of the SS Titanic, major oil spillage's, collisions, and many others, set the stage for International Regulations and Conventions on Safety of Life at Sea, Marine Pollution and many others.

Ocean Engineering/Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (OE/NAME) Course XIII The department’s curriculum leading to a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering is based on a broad working knowledge of all the basic engineering skills. The intended outcome of this program is a person whose main interest is the development of the ocean for the good of humanity, and in following this ambition is prepared to use whatever engineering disciplines are needed to address the problem at hand. As a part of the more general field of ocean engineering, naval architecture and marine engineering are concerned with all aspects of waterborne vehicles operating on, below, and just above the sea surface. The Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is intended to develop an individual who plans to concentrate in areas related to waterborne vehicles and/or their subsystems.

Ocean Engineer Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, as a part of the more general field of ocean engineering, is concerned with all aspects of waterborne vehicles operating below and just above the sea surface, as well as on it. Activities range from study of the engineering science disciplines pertinent to waterborne vehicles and the ir major subsystems; to the consideration of environmental effects on the vehicle; to the design, planning, fabrication, and construction of the vehicle, as well as to the study of the systems of which the vehicle is a part. The SM degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering is one of the graduate degree programs offered by the Pratt School of Naval Architecture, which is a major component of the Department of Ocean Engineering. Background Requirements for the SM Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Background in all of the following several basic areas is considered essential for all students:
  • Dynamics: Mathematical modeling of linear multi-element systems, system functions, stability analysis, three-dimensional kinematics.

The department's curriculum leading to a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering is based on a broad working knowledge of all the basic engineering skills. The program leading to the Ocean Engineer or Naval Engineer degrees require a higher level and significantly broader range of professional competence in engineering than that required for the S.M. degree. The program for an engineer's degree ordinarily includes subjects in the areas of economics, industrial management, and public policy or law, and at least 12 units of comprehensive design. Should the student be working toward the simultaneous award of the engineer's and master's degree, a single thesis is generally acceptable, provided it is appropriate to the specifications of both degrees and demonstrates the educational maturity expected of candidates for the higher degree. Additional information on departmental requirements is available from the Departmental Student Administration Office.
