Art of Ancient Near East Intro Early Neolithic Cities Sumer Akkad ... Back Fertile Crescent Geographically the Fertile Crescent is the area that encompasses: Anatolia (roughly modern Turkey), Mesopotamia (Iraq today), and Persia (Iran)
Neolithic culture began here about 9000BC (please keep in mind that you are entering a new AREA with overlapping time periods from the last chapter) farming spread from this region to the east and northwest to reach Europe by about 5000BC
In the Near East, agriculture villages evolved into cities (cities are distinguished by villages by having larger populations and a settled area clearly separated from its rural surroundings)
In Mesopotamia, Between 4000 and 3000BC, complex societies began to appear, with hierarchies of priest and kings. Prosperous cities developed into city-states, each with its own government. (Eventually these city-states were absorbed into larger kingdoms and empires)
The people of the Near East worshiped numerous gods and goddesses, attributing over them power over human activities and the forces of nature. Each city had one protective deity, and people believed that the dominance of their city depended on their deity being more powerful than the god or goddess of the surrounding city deities.
