    Geography of Agriculture
Dateline: 02/23/98 Around ten to twelve thousand years ago, human began to domesticate plants and animals for food. Before this first agricultural revolution, people relied on hunting and gathering to obtain food supplies. While there are still groups of hunters and gatherers in the world, most societies have switched to agriculture. The beginnings of agriculture did not just occur in one place but appeared almost simultaneously around the world, possibly through trail and error with different plants and animals or by long term experimentation. Between the first agricultural revolution thousands of years ago and the 17th century, agriculture remained pretty much the same. In the seventeenth century, a second agricultural revolution took place which increased efficiency of production as well as distribution which allowed more people to move to the cities as the industrial revolution got under way. NE Nebraska gets its name from an Indian word meaning "flat water" after the Platte River that flows through the state. It became the 37th state in 1867. Nebraska, once considered part of the American desert, is now a leading farming state. Nebraskans have practiced scientific farming to turn the Nebraska desert into a land of ranches and farms. Much of the history of the state is the story of the tough, strong-willed Nebraska farmer. In the 1860s, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim free land granted by the federal government. Many of the first farm settlers built their homes out of sod because they found so few trees on the grassy land. Tourists can now drive along highways that follow the historic Oregon and Mormon trails. Almost every county has a fair during the summer and many communities hold annual fall festivals. GOVERNMENT

The Regions of the United States New England The Mid-Atlantic The South The Midwest ... The West Americans often speak of their country as one of several large regions. These regions are cultural units rather than governmental units formed by history and geography and shaped by the economics, literature and folkways that all the parts of a region share. What makes one region different from another? A region's multicultural heritage as well as distinct demographic characteristics like age and occupation also make regions different and special. Within several regions, language is used differently and there are strong dialects. There are also differences in outlook and attitude based on geography. New England has played a dominant role in American history. Until well into the 19th century, New England was the country's cultural and economic center. The earliest European settlers of New England were English Protestants who came in search of religious liberty. They gave the region its distinctive political format town meetings (an outgrowth of meetings held by church elders) in which citizens gathered to discuss issues of the day. Town meetings still function in many New England communities today and have been revived as a form of dialogue in the national political arena. New England is also important for the cultural contribution it has made to the nation. The critic Van Wyck Brooks called the creation of a distinctive American literature, in the first half of the 19th century, "the flowering of New England." Education is another of the region's strongest legacies. The cluster of top-ranking universities and colleges in

Lincoln (Neb.) - June 30, 1997 - A new CD-ROM project from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will help teachers, students and environmental resource managers learn more about using remote-sensing data in physics, geography and environmental monitoring. The CD-ROM combines technology, data and resources from UNL, JPL and several Earth-observing spacecraft. Released by the Consortium for the Application of Space Data to Education (CASDE), the CD-ROM contains space shuttle images, aerial and satellite photography of Nebraska and California, tools to analyze and view and prototype lessons. The consortium includes UNL, JPL and Johns Hopkins University. Included in the CD-ROM is a prototype of "Virtual America" called "Virtual Nebraska." Multispectral images are used to provide comprehensive information about selected cities, including vegetation indexes, census data, water boundaries, land use and agriculture. It is hoped other states will develop their own CD-ROMs, culminating in a complete "Virtual America." Targeted to all Nebraska cities with a population of 5,000 or more, the first CASDE CD-ROM includes data and images from 12 cities of the nearly 70 available at the CASDE World Wide Web site. The disc will be sent to some 5,000 educators nationwide.
