Tour Canada from Space
This fly-over from the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing is informative and gorgeous. There is nothing here that could've been experienced a half-century ago except in a very minor way by a Canadian goose. The homepage has an interactive graphic of Canada, with little red squares to click to go to a location and one little yellow square for the most recent image. The pictures were taken from satellites and the text describes phenomena not seen before imaging was available from space. While something similar to this tour could have been put on a CD-ROM a decade ago, not until the advent of the Internet could the images be kept up-to-date on your desktop from the remote Centre.

    http://www.ianr.unl.edu/snrs/amet351/mccormick/geographyofSWNE.html
Geography of the Republican River Basin It wasn't as though the devastating floods were a surprise to the area. Floods of magnitude had occured 4 times in the prior 50 years, including a flood that killed 9 people in 1885. However, nobody was prepared for the Great Republican River Flood of 1935. An old Native American legend told of the dangers of the narrow, steep valley, which for the majority of southwestern Nebraska, is only 150 feet in width before abruptly rising 150 feet. "Big Waters Come, from Bluff to Bluff"
The Republican River enters Kansas from Colorado as the South Fork Republican River, and the major branch. The North Fork, considerably smaller, enters about 2 miles from the Nebraska-Kansas-Colorado Tri-State convergence. The Southern Fork enters about 5 miles north of the Cheyenne County (KS) border with Sherman County (KS). The River rapidly grows in size as it flows to the northeast, past St. Franis, and towards Nebraska. The river is running smoothly by the time it enters Nebraska.
Tributaries play a large roll in the formation and flood plane of the Republican River. The following is a listing of how tributaries affect the river, sorted by county. Several times there exists more than one creek by the same name, so if the creek switches counties, I will make sure to mention so. Otherwise, assume that each creek in each county is different.
