This is the third time (1993-1996, 1997-2000) NWU has received a four-year grant from HHMI to train teachers. Secondary science teachers are often the only science person in their high schooland sometimes even their junior high school. Mike Johanns' proposal for addressing the state's $220 million budget shortfall. Gov. Mike Johanns. State financial aid to K-12 public schools, Medicaid assistance, and public-safety agencies are left alone in the governor's proposal to cut most parts of the state budget by 4 percent this fiscal year and 5 percent next fiscal year. Left exposed to the cuts is the university, which prior to Tuesday had been thanking Johanns and the Legislature for giving it a "historical" increase in spending money to use on increasing faculty salaries and other efforts to boost the institution's research and teaching quality.
