MOUNTAIN PLAINS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2000 HOLIDAY INN CENTRAL, OMAHA, NE DRAFT COPY CALL TO ORDER: Welcome: At 9:05 President Marilyn Hinshaw called the meeting to order. Marilyn welcomed everyone and dispensed with Introductions advising people to introduce themselves as they spoke. Marilyn then asked for amendments to the Agenda. Hinshaw and Rea both provided the Board with written reports. Minutes of April meeting Hatch moved and Kuehn seconded a motion to approve the minutes of the July 29, 2000 Board meeting. Approved. General Business Nominating Committee Chair, Carol Hammond brought several issues back to the Board which had been held over from the July meeting. After a brief discussion, Haselwood made a motion that the position of Secretary for each of the sections be optional, and if needed, be appointed by the Chair instead of elected. Awe seconded. Motion approved. The Committee also proposed a motion to increase the consistency in section operations. Butcher made the motion that each Section provides for a Nominating Committee of 3 members. The Chair-elect of the Section will be one of the members and will chair the Committee with the remaining two members appointed by the Chair; and the sections will be directed to amend their bylaws accordingly. These changes will begin with the 2001 elections. Oberhelman seconded. Motion passed. Deacy expressed doubts about PNLA participating in the Nevada/MPLA joint conference. Edelen assured the Board that division of finances is clearly defined. Hinshaw described the Nevada conference as the most logical for PNLA participation since the Montana and Utah conferences are nearly 10 years away. After this brief discussion, the Board agreed to postpone further discussion until the next Board meeting.

Volume 14, Number 6 Oct 1990 Nebraska Gets Planning Grant The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced recently that it has awarded the Nebraska Library Commission $33,350 to develop a statewide preservation plan for Nebraska. The Nebraska Library Commission is serving as fiscal agent for this grant, which will be organized and administered through the Nebraska Documents Preservation Advisory Council. Formed in 1988, the Nebraska Documents Preservation Advisory Council is a cooperative preservation group which includes such agencies as the Nebraska State Historical Society, the Nebraska Records Management Division of the Secretary of State's Office, the University of Nebraska Libraries and NEBASE (Nebraska's OCLC network). Other members of the group are: the Nebraska Library Association, the Nebraska Humanities Council, the Nebraska Library Systems, the Nebraska Literary Heritage Association, the Nebraska Conservation Committee and PICKLE. The grant from NEH will enable Nebraska to identify its preservation needs and priorities for paper documents and records. Solutions to problem will be proposed based on surveys of records repositories and on ideas raised at strategic planning meetings. Forty (40) delegates from across the state have been invited to participate in the meetings. The first meeting will be held Oct. 3-5 in Lincoln at the Cornhusker Hotel. Among problems to be addressed by delegates is the brittle paper crisis facing repositories of Nebraska's written heritage. Based on surveys of libraries and county historical societies conducted in 1987 and 1988, preservation education and preservation microfilming are two recognized needs. The grant will assist the Council in seeking broader input and in publishing a plan of action.
