In 1951 the Ranas were overthrown and the monarchy restored under King Tribhuvan. Four years later he was succeeded by his son, King Mahendra. In 1959 Mahendra established a parliamentary constitution, and the ensuing elections were won by the Nepali Congress (led by B P Koirala) which had played a key role in the re-establishment of the monarchy.

Political History Government The historic victory of the 1990 movement to restore democracy led Nepal into a democratic country. The country underwent thirty years of the partyless Panchayat System preceded by centuries of autocratic rule. The Panchayat regime didn't provide much of a foundation for democracy, but democracy was what people wanted. The Constitution After the grand success of the People's Movement of 1990, one positive result was the promulgation within the year of a new constitution, which, though it doesn't please everybody, does invest sovereignty in the Nepalese people. The document includes a carefully worded description of Nepal as "a multiethnic, multilingual, democratic, independent, indivisible, sovereign, Hindu, and Constitutional Monarchical Kingdom." The King remains as a constitutional monarch and a symbol of Nepalese unity. He and a Council of Ministers from the executive branch; the legislative branch is composed of a 205-member House of Representatives (Pratinidhi Sabha), directly elected, and a smaller National Council (Rastriya Sabha). Political Parties The communist parties declare they're the party of the oppressed and poor (a sizable portion of Nepal's population), and promise social justice and a decent standard of living for all. Meanwhile, Congress portrays itself as the democratic alternative, appealing to conservative and middle-of-the-road voters.

Contact Us History of Nepal History of Nepal Before Nepal's emergence as a nation in the latter half of the 18th century, the designation ‘Nepal’ was largely applied only to the Kathmandu Valley. Thus up until the unification of the country, Nepal’s history is largely the history of the Kathmandu Valley. References to Nepal in famous Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata, Puranas and also Buddhist and Jain scriptures, establish the
country’s antiquity as an independent political and territorial entity.
The Vamshavalis or chronicles, the oldest of which was written during the 14th century, are the only fairly reliable basis for Nepal's ancient history. The Vamshavalis mention the rule of several dynasties the Gopalas, the Abhiras and the Kiratas over a stretch of centuries. However, no extant historical evidence has yet authenticated the rule of these legendary dynasties. The documented history of Nepal begins with the Changu Narayan temple inscription of

Contact Us History of Nepal Shah Dynasty, Unification of Nepal Prithvi Narayan Shah (c 1769-1775), with whom we move into the modern period of Nepal's history, was the ninth generation descendant of Dravya Shah (1559-1570), the founder of the ruling house
of Gorkha. Prithvi Narayan Shah succeeded his father King Nara Bhupal Shah to the throne of Gorkha in 1743 AD. King Prithvi Narayan Shah was quite aware of the political situation of the Valley kingdoms as well as of the Barsi and Chaubisi principalities. He foresaw the need for unifying the small principalities as an urgent condition for survival in the future and set him self to the task accordingly.
men marched into the city. A throne was put on the palace courtyard for the king of Kathmandu. Prithvi Narayan Shah sat on the throne and was hailed by the people as the king of Kathmandu. Jaya Prakash Malla managed to escape with his life and took asylum in Patan. When Patan was captured a few weeks later, both Jaya Prakash Malla and the king of Patan, Tej Narsingh Mallal took refuge in Bhaktapur, which was also captured after some time. Thus the Kathmandu Valley was conquered by King Prithvi Narayan Shah and Kathmandu became the capital of the modern Nepal by 1769.

It is certain that ancient Japanese intellectuals who read a travelogue written by Xuan Jiang, a famous Chinese monk and philosopher of the Tang Dynasty 1300 years ago, should have come across an account of the old Kathmandu valley during the reign of King Amsuvarman of the Licchavi Dynasty. It goes without saying that Japan and Nepal share a lot of similarities in terms of culture, religion, and even in terms of sentiment. People will be surprised to see how many of the deities worshipped by the Japanese, for example, are also Nepalese deities. The traditional culture of Nepal and Japan are closely linked together through the underground stream of history, which permeates both our cultures. Besides, Nepal has always attracted Japanese visitors with its lush, verdant vegetation, as well as with its incredibly multifarious vistas, replete with their respective flora and fauna. It should also be noted that the first students dispatched abroad in 1902 by Chandra Shamsher Rana, the then prime minister of Nepal, were those who came to Japan.

THE HISTORY OF PANAUTI
The name 'Panauti' is a formation of the Sanskrit word 'Purnamati' which symbolically means wholeness, completeness.
Historical facts:
The Shiva Lingam of Panauti:
The Indreshwar Mahadev Temple is a Shiva temple with a 'lingam' with four faces (chaturmukh). This lingam is dedicated to the name of 'Jayaswara' which means victorious lord, one of the names by which the god Shiva is called. The lingam is the most eminent symbol of Lord Shiva, one of the major gods of Hinduism. It is a simple and abstract columnar object with a rounded top. Generally stone lingams are kept in temples and often gilded metal lingams are kept for private worship. Particularly the lingams of Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, Pashupatinath Temple and Changu Narayan Temple are adorned with four faces oriented to the cardinal directions (mukhalingams). The four visible heads of the lingam are known as Mahadeva (East), Nandivaktra (West), Agora (South) and Umavaktra (North). The shaft of the lingam itself symbolizes the fifth direction or the centre, which in Hindu tradition is believed to be the formless absolute and symbolizes the entire cosmos (Sadasiva).
The Indreshwar Mahadev Temple:
The legend of Panauti:
The religious importance of Panauti is connected to the appearance of Lord Shiva in Panauti, which is told in the ancient vedic scripts.

A few years ago, in a letter to iATN, Irwin Bikram Chaudri detailed the conditions of automotive repair in Nepal. Mr. Chaudri noted, "For example, a full engine tune-up for a Toyota Corolla works out to NRs. 225.00. Which means a full tune-up works out to US $3.30 out of which salaries, overheads and taxes all have to be worked out.", he also made mention that, "Kathmandu is also one of the most polluted [air-pollution] cities in the world. Technicians and repair facilities are not aware of the long term impacts of air pollution." The huge response to the letter and forum posting led to a crusade among iATN members. Their intention, to bring aid to Nepali technicians by donating used equipment and sending technicians to the area in order to better train the locals.

This book is a compilation of geographical, historical and cultural information collected by the Jesuits during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Each chapter details fascinating first impressions of people and things unseen by any Europeans before. A valuable source of information for anyone interested in the early exploration of the Himalayan region. "Although few of the European travellers to Tibet in the 19th century realised it, much of the ground that they were exploring had already been traversed by the Jesuit missionaries over 100 years before. This book, based on manuscript as well as printed sources, chronicles the journeys of all the Jesuits who reached Tibet. The most interesting journeys are those of Stephen Cacella and John Cabral (1626-32) who visited Gyantse and Shigatse, John Grueber and Albert d'Orville (1661-64) who travelled from China through eastern Tibet to Lhasa and then went on to India, and Ippolito Desideri (1714-22) who travelled from Kashmir along the Tsangpo to Lhasa." - John Whelpton

EARLY HISTORY:
Nepal's rich prehistory consists mainly of the legendary traditions of the Newar , the indigenous community of Nepal Valley (now usually called Kathmandu Valley). There are usually both Buddhist and Brahmanic Hindu versions of these various legends. Both versions are accepted indiscriminately in the festivals associated with legendary events, a tribute to the remarkable synthesis that has been achieved in Nepal between the two related but divergent value systems.
References to Nepal Valley and Nepal's lower hill areas are found in the ancient Indian classics , suggesting that the Central Himalayan hills were closely related culturally and politically to the Gangetic Plain at least 2,500 years ago. Lumbini, Gautama Buddha's birthplace in southern Nepal, and Nepal Valley also figure prominently in Buddhist accounts. There is substantial archaeological evidence of an early Buddhist influence in Nepal, including a famous column inscribed by Ashoka (emperor of India, 3rd century BC) at Lumbini and several shrines in the valley.

Political and Economic Information
Nepal is a small country located between India and Tibet. It opened its borders in 1950-1951, and since then it has undergone tremendous economic, political, and social change. The country is experiencing major problems with deforestation, and it is involved in many development projects such as educational programs, women's associations, reforestation and erosion control projects, and the trekking and ecotourism industries. Since 1996, Nepal has been experiencing a rural Maoist insurgency which has resulted in the deaths of at least 75 people. However, attacks have not occurred in usual tourist destinations, and American citizens have not been the subject of attacks. History of Nepal
The recorded history of Nepal started with the Kiratis, who arrived in the 7th or 8th Century BC from the east. There is very little information known about them. It is known that they were sheep farmers and they were characterized by carrying long knives. It was during this period that Buddhism first entered Nepal. It has been said that during this time, Buddha visited the Kathmandu Valley and stayed for a short time in Patan. By 200 AD, Buddhism became less dominant and was replaced by Hinduism, which was brought by people who invaded the area from Northern India and overthrew the last Kirati king. This started the Licchavi era. With Hinduism came the caste system, and the classical age of Nepalese art and architecture.

Saving Nepal's girls
  • One woman's efforts to stop the trade in girls for brothels
  • David Holmstrom (holmstromd@csps.com)
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor KATHMANDU, NEPAL (TOM HUGHES) On a Saturday morning Anuradha Koirala darts about like a mother hen. The wiry, petite lady in a sari moves around a small courtyard keeping an eye on a couple of dozen children and teenage girls. It's wash day, clothes and bodies, and with each soapy child she touches comes a story. "Pulled from a trash bin," Ms. Koirala says of a tiny baby. "Thrown in a river because she has AIDS," she says of a teen washing clothes. "This one - pulled out of a mental institution," she says of a girl with long, dark hair glistening in the sun. Tenacious and tender, Koirala has been dubbed the Mother Theresa of Nepal. She is the founder and director of Maiti Nepal, a six-year-old social organization with transit homes on the Indian border that rescues young Nepali girls on their way to the brothels of Bombay and other Indian cities. She also provides a home, as well as literacy and vocational training, to street children and discarded prostitutes with HIV. In any society, Koirala's efforts would be laudatory. But here, she defies centuries of cultural and religious traditions that place women in subservient roles, (including family sanctioned prostitution). Yet in a short time, often through sheer pugnacity, she has emerged as a force for change.

Navigation Links: Meaning of Rajan Family Info Family Tree Nepal Family History ... Home Page How did the surname "Nepal" come to existence? There was the Great Migration of our early ancestors (the Aryans) from their ancient homeland, Airyanam Vaejo, in the North Pole due to the Ice Age glaciations that occurred in that ancient age. Their great journey was towards the South and the South-West, i.e. towards Iran, India, Greece, Russia, Germany and other European countries. Our ancestors came from the Iranian plateau and invaded the Indus River valley (in Pakistan) in ca. 1500 B.C. displacing the darker-skinned native population (the Dravidians). Then during the Rigvedic Period (1300-1000 BC), the ancestors spread east and south from the river valley towards India, establishing elaborate priestly rituals (Brahmin) and the beginning of the caste system. Their first journey was towards Sapta Sindhu (seven rivers) (Kashyap Giri or Hindu Kush Mountains). Among them, the Shaks moved southwards and entered Central India (East India of South Sindh) via Shakdwip. The Khas (my ancestors) moved northwest towards the Eastern Himalayas (Maanas Pradesh) - the Northern Hills of Sindh and central Meru, Pamir Plateau, Ural and Chitral, the Hills of Jalandhar and Kashmir Valley. This was around 8th century B.C. Then our ancestors lived around West Badrinath. Around 13th century A.D., after abandoning Kedar Bhumi, Parbat Pundit entered Sinja Karnali (Sijja Sheridhuska village). His elder brother Subal Pundit remained there. Jay Bidhyadhar Pundit (who was free of 36 taxes), the descensdent of Parbat pundit, had 4 sons and this is what they became afterwards:

With five star fluency Hotel Yak and Yeti has created a modern gateway to living history in its astutely preserved restaurants, banquet and conference halls which actively function inside the edifice of the Lal Durbar palace. Remaining true to the original dinner theatre it was built as in 1885, the Naachghar restaurant is a breathtaking fantasy of Nepalese plasterwork, gilt mirrors, and red velvet. At the Chimney restaurant, the legacy of the palace is carved in its intricate woodwork while more contemporary traditions echo the name of Boris Lissanevitch who transformed the landscape of Kathmandu Valley more recently. From the oasis of gardens which were once jungles, to the museums of conference halls and dining rooms of Lal Durbar Palace, to the plush international elegance of the Hotel Yak and Yeti's guest rooms, history lives as the highest mountains of the world continue casting light on the enchanting land of Nepal.
