At least 29 foreign tourists have vanished in the Sahara in little more than six weeks, the German police say. Of course, given its location in the South Pacific, New Caledonia boasts above all a glorious variety of natural treasures. Indeed, the inland portion of the islands are green and lush and the coastline is nothing short of spectacular. This is a country in which every manner of tropical outdoor activity can be enjoyed. Sailing, hiking, scuba-diving, mangrove exploring, fishing, sunbathing and other outdoor enjoyments are always at one’s fingertips while staying on the islands.
Indeed, the low cost of enjoying oneself in laid-back New Caledonia coupled with the rich array of activities and sights available on these islands makes it a truly special holiday destination. These might be the Improbable Isles of Oceania. From the last of the Conquistadors to the last of the cannibals - whose most recent feast was only 20, or perhaps ten, years ago - Vanuatu spans a Melanesia of kastom villages and five-star resorts, of "nambas" (the world's briefest underpants) and tax-haven bankers.
The Vanuatu archipelago (previously known as the New Hebrides) and its far-from-identical Melanesian "twin", New Caledonia were both named in 1774 by Captain James Cook, who maintained the "Anglophoney" tradition of giving improbably European names to far shores that bore no resemblance to their namesakes.
Thereafter, the French and British, and their proxies - missionaries, planters and traders - poked tongues at each other for years in both the New Hebrides and New Caledonia. In a gesture of schizophrenic accord, the 83 islands of the New Hebrides were eventually lumbered with a dual Anglo-French administration, known as the Condominium (aka the Pandemonium), that lasted from 1906 until independence in 1980. With a new government came a new name, Vanuatu, which means "Land Eternal".

From New Caledonia to Kanaky
Julie Eagles visited Kanaky in January this year for a meeting of students who had been involved in the Kanak English Language and Tertiary Training Program an affirmative action training program supported by Community Aid Abroad. She was there in order to evaluate the program and Community Aid Abroad's future role in Kanaky as it moves toward independence Julie stayed at Gossanah, a village with dramatic significance in the history of the Kanak struggle for independence. Her account includes background information that puts this struggle in a historical context. New Caledonia is one of Australia closest neighbours. Located in the Pacific to the east of Queensland, New Caledonia is closer to the Australian coast than New Zealand. To most Australians, New Caledonia conjures up the image of Pacific paradise. Indeed, many thousands of Australians visit each year to soak up the sun and atmosphere. A few of us may remember trouble there in the mid 1980's, but we rarely hear of this neighbour in our media today. When the French were blowing up nuclear bombs in French Polynesia recently, if we paused to wonder about continued French colonialism in the Pacific, perhaps we thought of New Caledonia/Kanaky for an instant. In the late 1960's a radical student movement took up the name Kanak (human being) as a challenge to the derogatory Canaque and Kanaka used by European settlers. The indigenous Melanesian population and other supporters of independence now use the name Kanaky for the islands. For the French and settler population, Nouvelle Caledonie (New Caledonia) is an overseas territory of France; for those who call this Kanaky, it is a colonised nation seeking to re-establish itself as part of the South Pacific.

1998 data The first humans to get here, were skilled navigators that came from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands around 1500 BC. Their distinctive culture was characterized by an elaborate pinhole incised pottery that was first discovered at the "Lapita" site near the town of Koné on the northwest coast of Grande Terre, the main island. Subsequent research has identified the presence of the Lapita culture on the coasts of New Guinea as early as 2000 B.C. Their forebears had migrated south from Asia through the Indonesian archipelago bringing with them at the Austronesian languages whose roots have been traced to Taiwan. Some interbred with the earlier Papuan populations but most of these remarkable navigators continued their eastward expansion to Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and beyond, giving rise to the Polynesian nations and also migrated north to populate Micronesia. New Caledonia was given its name in 1774 by James Cook because the terrain reminded him of Scotland that was called Caledonia by the Romans. The French explored it in 1793 but the first to settle there were Samoan Protestant missionaries in the south in 1841 and French Catholic missionaries in the north in 1843. The French took possession of the island in 1853 and used it as a penal colony until full-scale colonization began at the end of the 19th century. The indigenous "Kanaks" were given French citizenship in 1946.

Pre-history
The most remarkable aspect of Fijian pre-history is its antiquity. It is now known that people had reached the Fijian archipelago as early as 2000 years before the birth of Christ. Considering the fact that the Vikings, acknowledged as Europe's greatest sailors, didn't reach American until three thousand years later, or the fact that Columbus made his famous voyage only some five hundred years ago, the Fijian achievement must be seen as extraordinary. The question is, who were the first settlers. And the answer is that we don't know. There are some who are prepared to speculate and Dr Roger Green, Professor of Anthropology at Auckland University, in New Zealand is one of them. He calls this vast archipelago "Island of South East Asia". These migrants were relatively new, even though they were different from those of the people already living in the islands of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Hebrides (now Vanuatu) and New Caledonia. The first settlers were of Negrito stock with dark skin, woolly hair and other typical features. The newcomers were fairer, had straight or wavy black hair and we can assume were of many type stock. they would seem to have been good sailors and craftsmen and excellent potters who made a distinct type of ware we know as Lapita pottery after its initial discovery in New Caledonia. A picture emerges of these "Lapita" people. Sailors, adventurers, good navigators and consummate craftsmen. The trail of their pots, hooks, obsidian cutting tools and ornaments leads down from New Britain through some of the outer islands fringing the Solomons and Vanuatu, suggesting that perhaps they were not powerful enough to force settlements on the bigger islands which were already supporting large populations of people.

History
Terra Australis , and with stories of the noble savage and Pacific paradises proliferating around Europe, the English and French weren't far behind them. As the French missions became more powerful, traditional customs began to disintegrate and the islanders' way of life came under threat. 'Blackbirding', the twee euphemism for slavery that continued into the 20th century, and previously unknown diseases squeezed the population even more. The French saw the Pacific as a good place to dump their great unwashed masses, and they deported their first convicts in May 1864. Many were political prisoners from the Paris Commune, but others were the derelicts and petty thieves from the streets of the metropolis, who became known as 'wretches in paradise'. By the time deportation was banned in 1897, 21,000 convicts had been sent. The discovery of nickel and the arrival of free settlers from France exacerbated the race problem, as Europeans encroached on ever more tribal lands. In 1878 a seven month revolt against French rule resulted in 200 French and 1200 Kanak deaths. The repression that followed further weakened Kanak culture. Kanaks were recruited in large numbers during both world wars, and during WWII 40,000 American servicemen were based in New Caledonia. Those Kanaks employed on the US bases observed relatively good relations between blacks and whites and were paid real wages for the first time. After the war, the colony's status was changed to French overseas territory.
