    South Pacific Online since 1998 TO FIND OUT MORE GEOGRAPHY TO FIND OUT MORE MENU : History .ie A Melanesian archipelago located near the Tropic of Capricorn, New Caledonia is the furthest Overseas Territory from France (approx. 20 000km). It stretches out over a vast maritime zone (200 nautical miles zone) of about 1 450 000 km². The largest island of the archipelago, known as the "Grande Terre" (the mainland), covers a surface area of 16 350 km² out of a total of 19 000 km² of prominent land. It extends to the north with the Belep islands and to the south with the Isle of Pines. To the east, the archipelago of the Loyalty Islands consists of three large islands: Ouvéa, Lifou, Maré, and a small island called Tiga. A few other islands are scattered throughout the immense maritime zone: Walpole, Matthew, Hunter, the Chesterfields, Huon and Surprise islands.
