New Caledonia was discovered by James Cook who landed in Balade on September the 5th 1774. He named the Island New Caledonia because of its similar aspect to Scotland. He then discovered " l' Ile des Pins " the Island of pines that he reached in September the 20th 1774.
After Cook, Bruny D'Entre-Casteaux and Huon de Kermadec landed on " Ile des pins " on June the 7th 1792. For the 5 following years several explorers, navigators, sandal wood merchants, came to New Caledonia. An English merchant James Paddon settle in " ile NOU " (Nou Island). The present port of Noumea. Teachers from the London Missionary Society settled in the loyalty islands in 1840. The first catholic missionaries arrived in New Caledonia in December the 20th 1843. France took over New Caledonia on September the 24th 1853 in Balade where the admiral Febvrier Despointes raised the French flag. The Isle of Pines was taken in September the 29th 1853. From 1853 t o 1884, New Caledonia was administrated by military governors.
In 1854 the captain Tardy de Montravel chose the site of Noumea to establish the capital and the port .The town will be called " Port de France " until 1866. New Caledonia was then use as a convict center from 1864. 40000 convicts were transported and lived in extremely precarious conditions.

The French-Speaking Pacific: Population, environment and development issues
    Edited by CHRISTIAN JOST
    Brisbane: Boombana Publications, 1998
(272 pages, 243 x 174 mm, PB, ill., ISBN 1 876542 02 0) This volume is an important contribution to our understanding of the geography of the Pacific Island countries. It consists of a series of studies on the French-speaking Pacific Territories (Vanuatu, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna), the greater part of which are the fruit of entirely new and original work. It then both constitutes an in depth presentation of these territories, their particularities, their problems, and contains much food for thought in its analyses of the natural (terrestrial and marine) and the human (socio-cultural and economic) environments of these islands. French research on the Island Pacific has long been substantial and often of exceptionally high quality. It has markedly been transformed by the appearance, in the 1980s and 1990s, of a new generation of Pacific geographers whose scholarship has developed within the Islands themselves rather than having been transposed from other parts of the tropical world. This is a key publication for geographers, a unique resource for teachers, a reference for all those concerned with the question of effectively managing the future of the Pacific Islands. It will also prove invaluable to professionals in many fields who have research, cultural or trade interests in the region. For the general public, it is a much needed complement to commonly available tourist-oriented presentations of the Islands.
