About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of New Zealand (Introduction) From a map, New Zealand appears to lie in a remote corner of the southwest Pacific. In reality it is only about three hours flying time southeast of Australia, a non-stop overnight flight from the United States or a ten-hour direct flight from Singapore. From Europe your flight will typically take 20 to 24 hours. It must be special to come al this way, and indeed it is. New Zealand's spectacularly beautiful landscape incorporates vast mountain chains, steaming volcanoes, sweeping coasts, deeply indented fiords, lush rainforests and endless grassy plains. Equivalent in size to Great Britain, it has a population of only 3.8 million - making it one of the world's least crowded countries and a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation. Having a temperate climate with relatively small seasonal variation makes it a year-round holiday destination. For more general information on New Zealand, go to:

The North by Northwest Region of British Columbia follows Yellowhead Highway #16 from Tete Jaune Cache on the BC/Alberta border, to Prince Rupert on the Pacific coast, including Queen Charlotte Islands and north through the Nass and Stikine country to the Yukon border. From the earliest explorations of MacKenzie and Simon Fraser, to hordes of prospectors heading for the goldfields, to loggers and farmers, the development of BC's interior by packtrain, riverboat and rail leaves a rich historic record of trail-blazers and settlers.

1) Abstract
Extensional core complexes in New Caledonia expose high-pressure rocks that formed within the root zone of an ancient mountain belt system. This mountain belt may once have extended from New Guinea to New Zealand. Key locality mapping and micro-structural analysis of the high pressure schist belt has revealed evidence for a complex tectonic history involving at least two phases of compression as well as two distinct extensional events. The application of modern structural mapping techniques on the island of New Caledonia, has allowed a reinterpretation of the Tertiary and younger tectonic evolution of the central Southwest Pacific and highlights the significance of this belt when considering the tectonic evolution of the region.
2) Introduction
The study of the high pressure schist belt in northern New Caledonia was undertaken primarily to investigate processes involved in the extensional exhumation of high pressure rocks. Detailed structural mapping and sample analysis has allowed interpretation not only of the tectonic processes involved in exhumation, but also the geometries of these systems. Thus allowing investigation of the processes involved in the destruction of the mountain belt that must once have existed in this segment of the Indo-Australian plate.

TTPF offers regularity and continuity in communication within nations, and across the Pacific, by funding regional workshops, conference presentations, and publication of reports, guides and prototype classroom materials. TTPF builds on a series of regional workshops for history teachers and takes a wider scope by including the study and teaching of geography, politics, environmental studies and generally all social studies and social sciences, reflecting the linked reality of such teaching in the Pacific Islands. In 1995-96 the project's activities included regional workshops in Honiara (December 1995) and Hilo (July 1996), in-country workshops in Port Vila (September 1996), Nadi/Suva (October 1996) and Port Moresby (November 1996); the publication of Our History in Our Own Words A Guide to 100 Good Books A Guide to Student Essays and Projects the Honiara Report and Teachers, Teaching and History

... Australia/Pacific : New Caledonia New Caledonia
History Little is known about the Oceanians, who came from South-East Asia around 50,000 years ago and settled in the western Pacific, but between 7000 and 5000 BC further waves of migrants from South-East Asia brought agriculture, canoe building and pottery to the region. They left burial mounds on Grande Terre and Žle des Pins and petroglyphs on Grande Terre. The islands saw further migration from present-day Polynesia and Samoa from the 11th to the 18th centuries. In the late 16th century, the Spanish began sniffing around the Pacific in search of the mythical Terra Australis , and with stories of the noble savage and Pacific paradises proliferating around Europe, the English and French weren't far behind them.

Tightly folded metamorphic core complexes along the northeast coast of New Caledonia expose well preserved eclogites and blueschists that formed within the root zone of an ancient mountain belt. These high-pressure low-temperature metamorphic tectonites formed as a result of Tertiary collisional orogenesis after continental extension disrupted and fragmented the eastern margin of Gondwana. The discovery of a remnant root zone to an ancient mountain system in the Southwest Pacific has implications not only for the tectonic evolution and mineral potential of this region but also for the development of the eastern margin of the Australian Plate. Regional structural mapping, key locality mapping and microstructural analysis of the high pressure schist belt has revealed evidence for a complex tectonic history involving at least two phases of compressional orogeny with intervening and subsequent extensional epochs. Based on the results of this research a new hypothesis is proposed for the tectonic evolution of this orogenic belt. This genesis differs considerably from all previous origins proposed for New Caledonia (Aitchison, 1995; Brothers and Blake, 1973; Kronke, 1984) and this model represents a considerable advance in our understanding of the tectonic evolution of the SW Pacific.
