SELF-STUDY OVERVIEW New Hampshire Technical Institute has a long history of commitment to excellence in higher education, as evidenced by its many specialized accreditations and by its more than 30 years of accreditation by the Commission on Technical and Career Institutions. As the Institute seeks full accreditation from the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE), this ongoing commitment to excellence remains one of the Institute's greatest strengths. Its strong, dedicated faculty assumes the primary responsibility for the academic life of the institution, and members of the faculty develop and engage in a wide variety of professional development activities to promote individual and collective teaching excellence. The faculty also continually re-evaluates courses, programs, teaching styles, and delivery mechanisms in an effort to improve student achievement both during students' academic careers and during their professional lives following graduation. In the 18 months since the submission of its September 1999 Accreditation Self-Study Report (for Candidacy), the Institute has taken full advantage of the results of its self-evaluation and the recommendations of the Commission to improve the quality of its administration, instruction, and services. For example, in the Spring of 2000, a review process was developed to provide regular evaluation of the Institute's Mission/Values/Vision Statement. As this process has progressed, all departments have examined how they utilize the Statement as a planning tool, how they incorporate the professed values into their daily work, and how they communicate these values through their relationships with students. Realizing that the Mission/Values/Vision Statement must be the beacon that guides planning, decision-making, and evaluation, the Institute has developed a unified strategic plan to ensure that all such activities demonstrate a dedication to the college's mission and purposes and reflect the college's core values.

PREFACE In June 2000, New Hampshire Technical Institute received notification that the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) had voted to recommend the college for Candidate for Accreditation status and that the Board of Trustees of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) had voted to affirm this recommendation. Following a discussion of the implications of the issues raised by the Commission in its letter and an appraisal of the progress made in these areas in the months since the submission of the September 1999 self-study report, the Institute's leadership decided to continue the self-study process and request a visit in the Spring of 2001 to evaluate the college's readiness for full accreditation by the Commission. The Institute's self-study efforts, begun in the Fall of 1997, were revitalized by this decision. Most members of the campus community, having been directly involved in the self-study for candidacy, were well acquainted with the process. Understanding the value of both the self-study process and full CIHE accreditation to the future of the Institute, most of the nearly 80 original self-study team members who participated in the 1997-1999 efforts enthusiastically renewed their team assignments; they were joined by many new team members who were equally eager to participate in the process. Once again the team chairs formed the Steering Committee, and Professor Pamela Langley, Department Head of Chemistry and Biological Sciences, continued as coordinator of the self-study efforts.

The keynote speaker for the conference will be Sylvia Earle, one of the world's leading marine biologists and renowned underwater explorer and global educator. Author of Sea Change - A Message of the Oceans, Earle will speak about the critical condition of the world's oceans and offer some suggestions for change. The opening general session features Richard Wheeler, a retired schoolteacher and naturalist who journeyed alone in a kayak from Newfoundland to Cape Cod, tracing the 1700-mile migration route of the now-extinct great auk. Wheeler, the subject of a Nova television special, will share his spectacular photography of the trip as well as insights he gained about the Gulf of Maine. Watershed Day is a special event scheduled for Friday, August 2, at Merrowvista Education Center in New Hampshire's Ossippee Mountains. At this 720-acre mountain site, conference participants will explore freshwater and land use issues that impact the Gulf of Maine. Sessions will include forest "best management practices," water quality monitoring, mapping techniques, watershed education programs, aquatic organisms, natural pollution control, and others. The day will end with a cruise and buffet on Lake Winnepesaukee aboard the M/S Mt. Washington.
