This program provides an opportunity for students whose undergraduate work was in another discipline to earn teacher certification and a Master's degree. It is designed for the beginning educator who wishes to focus on instructional excellence and become a qualified generalist in education. A minimum of 36 semester-hours is required to complete the Master of Education degree. The total number of credits required for certification and for the degree may vary, depending upon the student's previous coursework. Students seeking secondary certification (which is available in Art [K-12], Biology [7-12], English [5-12], General Science [5-9], and Social Studies [5-12]) may need to supplement their undergraduate major with courses in the discipline as well as with professional education courses. The Elementary or Secondary Teaching programs are designed to meet the certification standards of the state of New Hampshire. CERTIFICATION (Elementary or Secondary)
In this section of the program, students take the courses that the New Hampshire State Department of Education requires for certification in Elementary or Secondary Education. The total number of credits required for certification may vary depending upon the student's previous course work.

The nation is facing a public crisis in mental healthcare for infants, children and adolescents. Many children have mental health problems that interfere with normal development and functioning. In the United States, one in ten children and adolescents suffer from mental illness severe enough to cause some level of impairment (Burns, et al., 1995; Shaffer, et al., 1996). Yet, in any given year, it is estimated that about one in five of such children receive specialty mental health services (Burns, et al., 1995). Unmet need for services remains as high now as it was 20 years ago. Recent evidence compiled by the World Health Organization indicates that by the year 2020, childhood neuropsychiatric disorders will rise proportionately by over 50 percent, internationally, to become one of the five most common causes of morbidity, mortality, and disability among children.
Concerns about inappropriate diagnosis-that is, either over- or under-diagnosis-of children's mental health problems and about the availability of evidence-based (i.e., scientifically-proven) treatments and services for children and their families have sparked a national dialogue around these issues. There is broad evidence that the nation lacks a unified infrastructure to help these children, many of whom are falling through the cracks. Too often, children who are not identified as having mental health problems and who do not receive services end up in jail. Children and families are suffering because of missed opportunities for prevention and early identification, fragmented treatment services, and low priorities for resources.

The Surgeon General's Call To Action To Prevent Suicide, 1999
At a Glance: Suicide Among the Young
    • For young people 15-24 years old, suicide is the third leading cause of death, behind unintentional injury and homicide. In 1996, more teenagers and young adults died of suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic lung disease combined.
    • Americans under the age of 25 accounted for 35% of the population, and 15% of all suicide deaths in 1996. The rate among children aged 10-14 was 1.6/100,000, the rate for children aged 15-19 was 9.7 per 100,000, and the rate for young people aged 20-24 was 14.5/100,000.
    • Important risk factors for attempted suicide in youth are depression, alcohol or other drug use disorder, and aggressive or disruptive behaviors.
    • Over the last several decades, the suicide rate in young people has increased dramatically. From 1952-1996, the incidence of suicide among adolescents and young adults nearly tripled, although there has been a general decline in youth suicides since 1994. From 1980-1996, the rate of suicide among persons aged 15-19 years increased by 14% and among persons aged 10-14 years by 100%. For African-American males aged 15-19, the rate increased 105%.

New Hampshire's 3rd Annual Summer Institute on Supporting Students with Autism/PDD in General Education Classes
Sponsored by the University of New Hampshire's Institute on Disability and the New Hampshire Department of Education Co-Sponsored by:
    The Autism National Committee
Autism Society of New Hampshire As educators and families work together to plan the most effective ways to educate students with autism/PDD in general education classes, they often ask:
    • What are the unique learning styles and challenges that many students with autism/PDD experience?
    • How do those styles and challenges affect learning in schools and living with families?
    • How can we best support students in typical education classes and with families?
This four-day conference is designed to answer these questions and develop effective support strategies for students with autism/PDD and their families, teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and school administrators. Each day the conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a morning keynote presentation by an internationally recognized expert in the field of autism. After the keynotes, participants will meet in pre-assigned, small work groups, facilitated by a working professional in the field. Work groups are designed to support participants to synthesize new information into effective day-to-day strategies for home and school. A variety of topical workshops will be offered in the afternoon. Tentative workshop topics include: Learning Styles, Facilitated Communication, Movement Differences, Developing Social Stories, Supporting Sensory Sensitivities, and Alternative and Augmentative Communication. Each day will conclude at 4:00 p.m.
