Teach Our Children Well By President Joan Leitzel think everyone in New Hampshire would agree that UNH plays a major role in education in this state. However, many people might not realize that this role is not limited to higher education. UNH also has an important influence on the quality of K-12 education in every New Hampshire school. Not surprisingly, UNH prepares more New Hampshire teachers than any other institution. UNH faculty members also lead the way in introducing innovative teaching techniques, finding applications for new technology in the classroom and improving education for special-needs students and students for whom English is a second language. In addition, they have provided essential expertise in curriculum reform, developing effective assessment tools and establishing state performance standards. New Hampshire is now experiencing the teacher shortage that had been predicted at the national level for the past 15 years. In May 2001, the State Department of Education identified critical shortages in 19 professional certification areas. Nine of these are in special education; the others are in foreign languages, English as a second language, music, chemistry, physics and mathematics. New Hampshire also has a critical need for guidance counselors, media specialists and technology educators. UNH is committed to providing the K-12 teachers our schools require. But it's not enough to ensure that the number of teachers is sufficient; the quality is equally important. Together with Plymouth and Keene State Colleges and the College for Lifelong Learning, UNH is developing strategies to ensure that our schools will have not only enough teachers, but enough good teachers.

Ocean Arks works with K-12 schools, colleges and universities to help people learn about and apply leading edge environmental thinking as part of their curriculum. Some of our activities include:
    • Tours of our projects,
    • Workshops and presentations at your school and in your community,
    • Helping you integrate Classroom Ecosystems into your curriculum,
    • Showing you how to design and build ecoystems on campus for display or research purposes,
    • Curriculum development,
    • Design consulting on ecological technologies for projects at your school and in your community.

    Tour of Ecological Systems
For some people who live in proximity to one of our projects, a tour offers an excellent introduction to our work and the work of others.
During a typical tour, for example, we talk about ecological design, stewardship, and the potential for reinventing our communities through the integration of beautiful and functioning natural systems into our homes and neighborhoods.
We help folks understand how complex natural systems work, from basic biology lessons to ethno-botany, the chemicals in our environment as endocrine disruptors, Gaia, and explorations in systems thinking and self-organization. Inevitably, we enter the world of new paradigms, where waste is a resource, bacteria and the micro-cosmos seem to rule the world, and where people come to realize that humans can indeed restore nature through simple measures in our everyday lives.

Status of the New Hampshire Curriculum Framework in the Arts A task force empowered by the New Hampshire Board of Education is in the process of drafting the New Hampshire Curriculum Framework for the Arts . Dr, DeTurk is a member of that task force. Like the National Standards for the Arts , the New Hampshire Framework includes Dance, Music, Theater and the Visual Arts as the component disciplines of the arts in the schools. Further, the Music section of the state Framework currently resembles the National Standards in Music in almost every detail. The Framework is now being circulated around the state for review, and is scheduled for submission to the state legislature next year. New Hampshire Educational Improvement and Assessment Program (NHEIAP) Authorization and Purpose. "In 1989, the State Board of Education adopted the goal of developing an educational accountability system as one of its top priorities for educational reform in New Hampshire. In 1991, a 27-member assessment steering committee submitted a detailed plan for the implementation of the system. The first task identified in that plan was the formation of implementation teams to develop language arts and mathematics curriculum and assessment frameworks . The grade three frameworks were completed and published in 1993, and provided the foundation for the development of the third-grade component of the

    INTRODUCTION

"The challenges are clear. The choices are before us. It is time to act." Everybody Counts
    Background
With the 1989 publication of Everybody Counts (MSEB, 1989) and the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics At the state level, school reform agendas are increasingly converging with mathematics reform agendas, and so, for example, statewide assessment activities are aligned with the reformist visions of mathematics that the NCTM Standards have precipitated. A total of states have revised or developed curriculum frameworks to be consistent with the NCTM Standards ; a total of states are engaged in some type of standards-based assessment effort. New Hampshire is also engaged in this reform activity. Following decisions by the State Board of Education and Legislature to launch a new statewide assessment in mathematics at grades three, six, and ten, teams of educators and community members were assembled to create documents to guide the development of the testing process. Molleen,
Ok, here's the sort of information that I have been able to find. There are two particularly large repositories of information: the Putnam Standards Page and the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) The Putnam page has a page for each state, and, if one exists, a link to framework pages at the respective state's web site. ENC has links to a couple of documents at its own web page, and, more importantly, references to hard copies of most states' frameworks that they have. Thus far, I've only gotten through to Idaho or so in terms of going and checking out what is really out there. Let me know what you think of all this.
