Tobacco Use Among Middle and High School Students - New Hampshire, 19952001
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States ( ). Because 80% of adult smokers began smoking as minors ( ), efforts to prevent smoking initiation have focused on adolescents. To examine trends in smoking prevalence among adolescents, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services analyzed data from the New Hampshire Youth Risk Behavior Survey (NHYRBS) and the New Hampshire Youth Tobacco Survey (NHYTS) during 19952001. This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which indicate that smoking prevalence in New Hampshire has declined among both middle and high school students. When fully operational, New Hampshire's comprehensive tobacco-prevention and -control program should lead to further reductions in smoking among adolescents and begin to decrease smoking among adults. NHYRBS was conducted in grades 912 in odd-numbered years during 19952001. Although survey results for 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001 were reviewed, weighted data were available only from 1995 ( Table 1 Table 1 ). The survey used a two-stage cluster sample design; schools were selected with probability proportional to size, and classrooms in schools were selected at random. All students in selected classrooms were eligible to participate. The 2001 survey was divided into two separate samples, one for middle schools (grades 68) and one for high schools (grades 912). Analysis of middle school data was restricted to grades 78. In all surveys, local parental consent procedures were followed before survey administration.

New Hampshire's 3rd Annual Summer Institute on Supporting Students with Autism/PDD in General Education Classes
Sponsored by the University of New Hampshire's Institute on Disability and the New Hampshire Department of Education Co-Sponsored by:
The Autism National Committee
Autism Society of New Hampshire As educators and families work together to plan the most effective ways to educate students with autism/PDD in general education classes, they often ask:
  • What are the unique learning styles and challenges that many students with autism/PDD experience?
  • How do those styles and challenges affect learning in schools and living with families?
  • How can we best support students in typical education classes and with families?
This four-day conference is designed to answer these questions and develop effective support strategies for students with autism/PDD and their families, teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and school administrators. Each day the conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a morning keynote presentation by an internationally recognized expert in the field of autism. After the keynotes, participants will meet in pre-assigned, small work groups, facilitated by a working professional in the field. Work groups are designed to support participants to synthesize new information into effective day-to-day strategies for home and school. A variety of topical workshops will be offered in the afternoon. Tentative workshop topics include: Learning Styles, Facilitated Communication, Movement Differences, Developing Social Stories, Supporting Sensory Sensitivities, and Alternative and Augmentative Communication. Each day will conclude at 4:00 p.m.
