Graduate Program in Communication Disorders Master's of Science for Teachers/Communication Disorders (MST/CD)
Degree Offered:
The Department of Communication Disorders continues to offer a Master of Science (MS) degree for students who wish to prepare to practice in a variety of job settings in speech-language pathology. The 43 credit MS program enables participants to meet the academic and practicum requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for the Certificate of Clinical Competence. The MST/CD degree represents a second option offered by the Department of Communication Disorders. This 30 credit program is intended for a specific audience: practicing speech-language therapists (referred to in NH as speech-language specialists) who need to complete graduate training in order to meet the federal requirements for qualified providers under I.D.E.A., and thus maintain their employment in school settings. This two year program meets and exceeds degree requirements stated by teacher certification divisions from the Department of Education in Maine and New Hampshire. Applicants from other states should research requirements to practice in schools in their state, prior to applying, to verify reciprocity agreements in their respective states.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants for admission should possess a bachelor's degree in communication disorders or its equivalent (i.e. a degree approved by their state department of education for the preparation of speech and language clinicians)

Certification
A hundred years ago a person could enter the teaching profession with a relatively small amount of preparation. This is no longer true.
Entering the teaching profession has required increasingly greater training over the years. Teaching today requires better preparation because of the knowledge explosion and because more is now known about how children learn.
Today, virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate as well. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
STATE OF MICHIGAN In the state of Michigan the student who meets these requirements receives the Provisional teaching certificate, either elementary or secondary, which is valid for six years. The elementary certificate qualifies him to teach kindergarten through the fifth grade and his major and /or minor in grades 6-8 (exceptions are available for smaller schools). The secondary certificate qualifies him to teach the seventh through the twelfth grades. During the six year period following graduation, the new teacher should complete three years of actual teaching and a minimum of eighteen semester hours of course work in a planned program of study in college or in graduate school to receive a PROFESSIONAL certificate.

State-By State Analysis NEW HAMPSHIRE New Hampshire does not meet AFT criteria for good legislation. Charter schools do not have to meet state standards; up to 50 percent of the teachers may be uncertified; and employees may not remain in the bargaining unit. Admissions policies: State standards apply:
No. Each school must specify its own curriculum and goals. Uses the same test instrument: Yes. At least annually and near the end of each school year, charter schools shall evaluate the educational progress of each pupil. Such evaluations shall include, but not be limited to, the New Hampshire statewide education improvement and assessment programs. The cost of this shall be borne by the state. Requires approval of local district: Local school boards approve or disapprove proposed charters. Collective bargaining: Charter schools have the right to bargain as a separate unit. The teacher must withdraw from other bargaining unit.

The M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education prepares students as early childhood professionals within a variety of fields involving children and their families. A program of studies is designed for each student based on the student's professional goals. With the careful combination of courses and practica, the program leads to New Hampshire teacher certification (K-3) and fulfills the Bureau of Licensing and Standards teacher and director certification requirements.
An interview is required with the Director of the ECE Program to review transcripts and develop a program of studies. Taking into consideration previous course work and prior experiences, the program director reviews the required and elective courses for the certification area to determine: the sequence of the course work, waiver of courses, and any additional background preparation indicated by the General Education Studies Checklist. The student's prior teaching experiences are reviewed to determine the experiences needed to fulfill the practica requirements. Early field based experiences are tailored to the needs, competencies, and current and prior experiences of the applicant. A minimum of one credit of practicum is required.
A 16-week internship in ECE will be designed based on the student's goals, objectives and background. Students choose two eight-week placements or one 16-week placement depending on certification requirements. Internship experience is required with children from birth to age six if not met by previous teaching experiences. Students applying for teacher certification complete a minimum of eight weeks in kindergarten through third grade as a part of their 16-week internship.

In August I asked the following question to the members of the listserv: Here at George Mason University we have a program called FAST TRAIN that helps international teachers get PK-8 certification (with a Masters option after that). However, we also get inquiries from teachers who would like to work on their secondary certification. Does anyone have a list of programs where international teachers might get their secondary certification? We would like to pass this information on when we get these types of phone calls and e-mails. Here is a compilation of the responses I received as of 9/7/99: Universities to check with: The College of New Jersey internat@tcnj.edu University of Maryland www.ed.umuc.edu/grad/pdp gradpdp@nova.umuc.edu Plymouth State College (of the University of New Hampshire) www.plymouth.edu/psc/mastered forgrad@mail.plymouth.edu The University of New England in Portand, ME uneinfo@educate.com Walden University in Minneapolis, MN request@walden.edu Michigan State University http://ed-web3.educ.msu.edu/mact/intsites.htm contact: Bob Martin rmartin@pilot.msu.edu
