Paying for college: Keep your child's options open
As New Jersey's public school employees, we encourage every student to view education as a life-long process. And about eight out of 10 public school graduates in New Jersey continue their education after high school.
We know, however, that formal higher education can be costly. The average cost of attending a public four-year college (tuition, room and board, books and other expenses) is more than $8,000 per year*.
If your child has the desire and ability to continue his or her education, don't allow a lack of funding to rule it out. Many families have given up such opportunities because they assumed a student wasn't needy enough or outstanding enough to qualify for financial assistance.
Be sure to explore all of the options. Chances are, regardless of your circumstances, your child is eligible for some type of financial assistance for higher education.
In addition, get an early start. For a student enrolling in college in the fall, you should begin applying for financial aid between January 1 and March 1 of that year.
*1998-99 estimate Types of assistance Generally, there are three types of financial assistance for higher education:

Definition The basic charter school concept is encompassed in the idea of " autonomy for accountability ". Charter schools are public schools of choice that are granted a specific amount of autonomy (determined by state law and the local charter) to make decisions concerning the structure, curriculum, and educational emphasis of the school. In return for this autonomy, charter schools are held accountable for the academic achievement of the students in the charter school, and the school faces suspension or closure if accepted performance standards are not met. The charter school typically receives between 85 percent to 95 percent of the public school funds for each student enrolled. Most charter schools are newly established schools, but some are conversion schools-those that previously existed as either public or private schools. Charter schools are as likely to have minority enrollments as other public schools. Charter schools do tend to be smaller than other public schools. Other than these similarities, there are few other generalizations that can be made about charter schools. The variety of curriculum focus is extensive-the sky does not limit the creative endeavors of charter school developers and operators. History of Charter Schools
Minnesota was the first state to establish legislation allowing for the creation of charter schools in 1991. Since then, 34 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia have enacted some variation of charter school legislation. As of September 1998 there are more than 1200 charter schools that exist in urban, suburban, and rural areas.

The New Jersey Comfort Care Coalition, a partnership of leading public and private agencies, providers and citizens seeks to promote improvements in end-of-life care practice and policy. Specifically, they have created interdisciplinary training for health professions students and clinicians, new models to finance care, and a comprehensive campaign for public education and dialogue. Coalition partners will participate in four workgroups. The Workgroup on Health Professions Education (with Subcommittees on Professional Preparation and Continuing Education) will create: (1) model interdisciplinary training programs for health professions students (in medicine, nursing, social work, and pastoral care); (2) offer continuing education for acute and long-term care clinicians (physicians, nurses, social workers, clergy, administrators); (3) collaborate with state regulatory agencies to encourage or mandate training; and (4) evaluate changes in knowledge, skill and institutional policies. The Finance Workgroup will examine state laws and policy that impact the financing of end-of-life care and actively promote revisions to enhance reimbursement for palliative services. This group will also develop an innovative and comprehensive end-of-life benefits package for state regulated insurance plans including managed care and Medicaid.

http://www.njpdc.org/pages/instructor.html
Dear Colleagues: The New Jersey Professional Development Center for Early Care and Education is offering another opportunity for professionals to improve the quality of child care and early education in New Jersey: The Instructor Approval System. The Instructor Approval System is a statewide system whereby instructors in Early Care and Education, Out-of-School Time, and Primary Education may submit their applications to the Clearinghouse of the NJ Professional Development Center for Early Care and Education. They may then be approved as an "Associate Instructor," "Instructor," or "Master Instructor," depending on their educational level and amount of work experience. The qualifications for each instructor level are enclosed on the Instructor Approval Criteria grid. All child care centers, agencies, and parent groups looking for speakers or trainers on a particular topic will have access to the Approved Instructor Database , located in the Directory of Instructional Resources at www.njpdc.org. Thus, having a listing in this database would be a great way to present your services as an individual or agency, and to list an individual's credentials.

Spring is the season of expectation, embodied as much as anything by the approaching high school graduations and proms. But the season has also become a time of foreboding, bringing a sense that some of the futures we see just awakening in our schools will in a bout of drinking be gone. The theme of this April’s Alcohol Awareness Month, "Give Children a Chance – End Underage Drinking," confronts the fact of alcohol’s influence over so many young lives – it remains the drug of choice among adolescents – and challenges us to put a stop to it.
