10/09/01 Pearson Education Makes Working Mother's Upper Saddle River, NJ October 9, 2001. Pearson Education, the world's leading educational business headquartered in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, has been named to the prestigious Working Mother magazine list of "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers," the magazine announced in New York City today. This list compiles corporations that recognize the value and needs of working families. This is the second year in a row that Pearson Education's progressive work life programs have been lauded. Previously commended in Working Mother's top five for its workplace flexibility, Pearson Education is already a publishing industry leader when it comes to work life initiatives. "Savvy companies like Pearson Education understand that human resources are their most valuable asset" says Carol Evans, CEO/President for Working Mother Media, which publishes Working Mother magazine, "and that employees need solutions to make juggling work and home easier." Angela Schwers, a vice president of Human Resources at Pearson Education, concurs: "We at Pearson Education understand that in order for our employees to be successful, we must provide programs that will help them navigate their work and personal lives." To that end Pearson Education's work life program includes a private lactation room for breastfeeding mothers, emergency back-up childcare, and flexible scheduling alternatives, including compressed work weeks and telecommuting.

Parent and Community Involvement Internet Resouces National Education goals for the year 2000 state that "every school will promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional, and academic growth of children." These goals can be met through involvement on multiple levels and by multiple participants:
    • Schools can involve parents in the decision-making process educating and training them in curriculum, budget, reform and other issues; facilitating their participation in course selection and student placement; and providing parents with current information on school policies and student performance.
    • Teachers can help parents become more involved in the education of their children by integrating parent involvement activities into the curriculum and being sensitive to difficulties that may hinder their involvement.
    • Parents can construct a relationship with schools and teachers through a variety of strategies , such as personal communication with teachers (notes, phone calls, meetings), asking the teachers for regular feedback (positive as well as negative), volunteering to assist with school activities, and monitoring their child's homework.
