HIV policy, staff development, and curriculum in New Jersey middle and high schools New Jersey Department of Education HIV/AIDS prevention program in-depth evaluation Policy, staff development and curriculum issues were the focus of the in-depth evaluation designed and implemented by CABER Evaluation Consultation Center (EC ) staff working with the New Jersey Department of Education. A representative random sample of middle and high schools was selected from a pool of 870 schools, yielding 430 schools in 294 districts. Data were collected from superintendents, principals, lead health teachers, and HIV/AIDS teachers. Results showed that the vast majority of districts complied with mandates regarding placement, sequence, and age-appropriate instruction. Forty percent of schools used skills-based instruction. Teacher training was related to instructional practice (e.g., more comprehensive instruction; broader coverage; and initiation of skills-based methods). Multiple policy, staff development, and curriculum recommendations for program improvement were generated. Findings, conclusions, and recommendations for program improvement were written in summary reports and submitted to NJDOE. Select findings are further discussed in a research article under review for publication.

NATIONAL NETWORKS OF EIC MODEL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOLS As the EIC Model has become better known in the education community, there has been growing interest in establishing networks of EIC demonstration sites in both public and private schools.
