Standard 4: All students will demonstrate self-management skills. Standard 5: All students will apply safety principles. Samples of “hands-on” learning activities Cross-Content Workplace Readiness Standards Introduction As the content committees met and reviewed the eight subject specific standards (the seven listed areas plus career education), certain themes recurred. These common themes reinforce the notion that each content area draws on key elements of other content areas. For example, the need for students to learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills was reflected in all of the sets of standards. Since these cross-content workplace readiness standards are important to the success of all students in all content areas, they have been identified here for special emphasis: All students will develop career planning and workplace readiness skills.

Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement
An article from School Library Media Quarterly by Keith Curry Lance, Director, Library Research Service, Colorado which details the Colorado study which looked at the relationship between funding of Library media centers and student achievement. One conclusion was that students at schools with better-funded Library media centers tend to achieve higher average reading scores, whether their schools and communities are rich or poor and whether adults in their community are well or poorly educated.

About Advocacy Delivery Discounts ... Youth NoveList will not only support students at the high school level - the product is truly a resource for readers of all ages. Here are just a few of the ways that NoveList can support the growth and development of reading at all grade levels:
By Grade 4, the students of New Jersey schools are to display a variety of reading skills. These include listening and viewing skills, to assist with reading and identifying elements of a story such as characters and setting. NoveList supports reading instruction at this grade level by:
  • Allowing teachers and school media personnel to identify books that are suitable for reading aloud in a classroom setting. Enabling teachers and school media personnel to locate books to use in guided reading activities and for emerging readers to read independently (easy readers). Empowering students to use their new understanding of story elements such as character or setting to find books of interest (readers can find books by the age, grade level or ethnicity of the characters in a book or search for books set in a certain country or state). Ensuring that students have successful reading experiences by matching their reading skills with texts that challenge but do not frustrate them (the Lexile measures contained in NoveList enable matching young readers with books that support successful reading experiences).
