About the Museum New York Transit Museum's Main Facility in Brooklyn Heights Closed for Renovation. Reopening in 2003. The New York Transit Museum, located in a decommissioned subway station in Downtown Brooklyn on the corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street is closed for renovations. Watch for our re-opening this year. A historic 1936 IND subway station is a perfect setting in many ways for a museum dedicated to mass transit.  But an old subway station has some serious drawbacks for museumgoers and administrators. Now the Museum has the chance to fix them.  The work taking place is complicated, and must be undertaken with care to maintain the historic character of the Museum’s facility and without cutting into precious exhibit space. Renovations include enhanced climate control systems, new fire and safety installations, and improved lighting and electrical systems. There will be a new art gallery and a renovated lecture/media room.  The Education Department will be reconfigured to include a classroom for children’s workshops and a new resource center, computer lab and reference library. A new permanent exhibition on the history of surface transportation, buses and trolleys, will be installed using elements of a New York City intersection, with new interactive exhibits and a display of over 200 trolley models.

A Guide to Special Education
Produced by New York Congress of Parents and Teachers, Inc. (NYS PTA) and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) All Students Can Learn Every child can learn. Across New York State, children with disabilities are learning and achieving at unprecedented levels. Some children with disabilities need special education programs and services or other supports to help them learn. The Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) establishes a prominent and active role for parents and teachers in planning and implementing educational programs for eligible students with disabilities. Parents and teachers, working collaboratively with other school staff, play critical roles in helping students become contributing individuals in adult society. Sometimes special education policies and procedures can seem overwhelming to parents, teachers and school personnel. Take heart: The information provided in this guide can help you participate meaningfully in a child's educational program. General Information A student with a disability has a mental, physical or emotional impairment that affects his or her educational performance and requires special services and programs. In New York State, special education is provided for preschool students (ages 3 to 5) and school-aged children (ages 5 through 21.) For school-age children, disabilities that may require special education services include autism, deafness, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, learning disability, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, or visual impairment (including blindness).

REBUILDING THROUGH UNITY

Representative Assembly 2002
America suffers from a "crisis of accountability" that can be overcome only through education, state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer told delegates. Spitzer said Enron and other financial fiascoes in the profit and not-for-profit sectors demonstrate the need for a national ethical re-affirmation. "We need to re-educate ourselves in terms of ethics, in the standards by which we abide, and we have to set these standards high and demand that our leaders live up to them," he said. Education is also the best, if not the only, defense against the fanaticism that threatens the nation in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks. "We have defeated every successive ideology that tried to defeat U.S. democracy," Spitzer said. "But fanaticism is far more dangerous than any of the competing ideologies we've overcome in the past. Fanaticism cannot be dealt with rationally; you cannot negotiate with the fanaticism of the present." The answer, according to Spitzer, is education about democracy.

EDUCATION The twenty-first century has left the age of the industrial worker, passing to the age of the knowledge worker. Both general and specialized education have assumed greater importance for personal development; for the civic, social, and economic strength of the nation; and for the search for solutions to global problems facing humankind. The nation's future depends on the priority given to the development of new knowledge and to investments in human capital. For individuals, the benefits of education are increasingly positive, since opportunities to acquire satisfying jobs and a decent standard of living are requiring higher levels of formal education. Building on its history and past programs in the field, Carnegie Corporation will dedicate a major part of its grant funds over the next few years to education reform, specifically urban high school redesign, with an emphasis on adolescent literacy and the preparation of teachers who are on the front lines of that reform

OUR MISSION Carnegie Corporation of New York was created by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 to promote "the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." Under Carnegie's will, grants must benefit the people of the United States, although up to 7.4 percent of the funds may be used for the same purpose in countries that are or have been members of the British Commonwealth, with a current emphasis on Commonwealth Africa. As a grantmaking foundation, the Corporation seeks to carry out Carnegie's vision of philanthropy, which he said should aim "to do real and permanent good in this world." OUR WORK The program areas that are now the focus of the Corporation's work have evolved over time, adapting to changing circumstances as Andrew Carnegie wished. While current program directions have been designed to correspond with the Corporation's historic mission and legacy and to maintain the continuity of its work, they are also intended to serve as catalysts for change.

The Coalition seeks to insure that, whenever appropriate, students with disabilities are provided with the supports, services, and accommodations they need to progress in the general education curriculum in general education classes in their neighborhood schools. Coalition staff research and report on LRE issues and implementation, maintain an interactive website and conduct workshops with parents and community groups.
