The Dutch claimed New York in 1609, establishing the colony of New Netherland by 1624. They developed a landowning aristocracy, but in 1664 gave up the land to the English, who divided it into New York and New Jersey colonies, although the Dutch briefly took back over 1673-74. Border conflicts existed between New York and Connecticut until 1731, New Jersey until 1769, and Massachusetts until 1773. In 1776 New York declared itself independent, and Vermont split away. In 1788, New York became the eleventh state, and two years later New York finally recognized Vermont's independence from it. The building of canals and railroads led to improved transportation and easier settlement during the mid-1800s. New York supported the Union cause during the Civil War, and its cities were home to huge numbers of immigrants throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

This web site was created in 1995 to further that goal.  Over the years, it has grown to contain the largest selection of books relating to New York, as well as a wealth of New York history. The links below are to pages created over the years for my customers. Many have varying degrees of commercial aspects, but they also contain information I feel is too important to genealogists and researchers to be left off this page.

When I was a freshman in high school, I had a class project for my history class that required me to build a very basic family tree. So I called my grandparents and asked them about their families. I wrote up my report, then promptly forgot about it. Years later, my paternal grandparents died, and I started wondering about their history. I know, I know, great timing. So I dug out my report from 9 th grade, downloaded a very simple GED-type program for my computer, and decided that genealogy would be one of my hobbies. At first, I had a great time organizing all the information that I was able to glean from living relatives. But when that was done, I didn't have a clue about where to start researching. So I quit again. Then for Christmas in 1998, my dad bought me a copy of Family Tree Maker . He had just received a box of his late father's papers, and wanted me to help him sort through the papers and photos. And this time, I have the Internet to help me! I've posted some of my information to the WorldConnect project at Rootsweb . I've also posted some of it to GenCircles
