Elementary and Secondary Level Acquiring Literacy in English In a five-year program of research, CAL and its collaborators, Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University, seek to improve our understanding of the factors that predict success as Spanish-speaking children learn to read and write in English. Knowledge about these factors could be applied in the classroom to enhance the teaching of English literacy. The Aspire Curriculum: Professional Development for Bilingual and ESL Paraprofessionals As part of a career ladder project at the University of Central Florida, CAL has developed and field-tested a curriculum for the professional development of paraprofessionals who work with English language learners. CAL conducts workshops for such paraprofessionals and for staff developers to present the curriculum. Comprehensive Center, Region XIV

  • Independent Schools are not-for-profit schools, each governed by a board of trustees and funded by tuition, endowment, and annual giving. They are selective schools, offering high-quality education, including a rich variety of sports, arts, and extra-curricular opportunities. Substantial financial aid attracts a diverse student body.
The schools in the Greater New York area are day schools ranging in size from 200 to 1200 students, grades K-8, K-12, or 9-12. They can be coed or single-sex. Student-faculty ratios are excellent, with teaching sections averaging 16-18 students
Independent schools in New York offer salaries, health plans, and benefits that are competitive with NYC public schools. Starting salaries for a recent graduate range from $33,000 to $38,000, with increases for each year of experience and advanced degrees.
Most schools will help fund graduate study and underwrite conferences, workshops, and summer programs. There are many opportunities for advancement and professional development.

Homeroom.com Improves Student Math Scores On The Texas Assessment Of Academic Skills (New York, NY and Austin, TX, November 13, 2000) - Homeroom.com, a division of The Princeton Review, announced today that students who used Homeroom.com in a pilot program during the 1999-2000 school year demonstrated greater improvement on the math TAAS than those students who did not use the program.
Homeroom.com, a Web-based educational tool designed to improve school performance as measured by an increase on scores on high-stakes standardized tests, was piloted in more than 25 Texas schools during the 1999-2000 school year. Analysis of test results for the five Houston-based schools that submitted their scores indicates that the use of Homeroom had a significant impact on score improvements over scores achieved during the prior academic year. The sample includes students in grades 4, 6, 7 and 8. As illustrated by the following table, students in grades 4 and 6 showed the greatest year-to-year improvement. Specifically, fourth grade students improved their scores twice as much as non-users; sixth grade Homeroom users improved nearly 4%, while non-users experienced a slight decline in scores. Lastly, seventh grade users score improvement was 16 times greater than that of non-users.

eChalk Offers Alternative Online Communication Service for K-12 Schools
New York, NY (September 10, 2001) - eChalk , New York, NY (September 10, 2001) - eChalk, a leading Web-based communication provider for K-12 schools and school districts, announces an agreement to deliver critical communication platforms to former WebAdemic K-12 schools.
Until recently, WebAdemic was used by over 3,000 K-12 schools and districts to connect students, teachers, parents and staff with its free Web-based communication service. The company has since discontinued the service and has named eChalk, an advertising-free, subscription-based service, as its successor in the market. Schools that had been using WebAdemic can now choose eChalk to provide an array of online tools specifically designed for K-12 users.
eChalk's service includes student-safe e-mail, password-protected accounts, public homepage, online classrooms, teacher Web pages, and file storage on a highly secure, Web-based platform. The system is scalable and can service a single school or all schools in a district or state, and can be accessed from any computer with Internet access at any time.
"eChalk's commitment to enhancing the critical school-to-home connection mirrors our own, and we are pleased that we can offer eChalk as the best option for schools' communication needs," said Steven Beckman, CEO of Achieve Communications, which owns the WebAdemic property. "We did our homework - and eChalk as a product surpassed all of our requirements with its ease-of-use and management, customization options, and level of security."

As its enrollment expands, University of California campuses have formed more than 70 partnerships with disadvantaged K-12 schools around the state in an effort to motivate students, create greater educational opportunities for teachers and administrators, and better determine what factors lead to differences in academic achievement. The goal of these partnerships is to foster long-term, systemic change in schools that traditionally prepare few of their students for college and to double the number of UC-eligible graduates from each participating high school. The University also has begun a major expansion of its professional development programs for K-12 teachers and administrators. A few highlights: UC is expanding the California Subject Matter Projects, a network of discipline-specific professional development projects for teachers. The program provides year-round direct services to teachers through summer workshops and institutes, along with support during the regular academic year. Emphasis is placed on efforts to raise STAR test scores and help students prepare for the high school exit exam. Discoveries and developments in 1999-2000

The programs we will write are called applets , a type of Java program that lives on a web page.
Onto the the Java Academy The World Wide Web offers the potential for revolutionary changes in education at all levels from K-12, undergraduate, graduate and continuing (lifelong) levels. Currently NPAC several K-12 academic programs in New York State. Development of such programs is particularly challenging, since most K-12 schools have nonexistent or inadequate computer and communications infrastructures, and most K-12 educators have little idea of how to use the NII for education. In response, NPAC researchers have developed The Living Schoolbook .The Living Schoolbook is a HPCC (High Performance Computing and Communications) educational resource provided to three upstate and three downstate K-12 schools in New York State. It is a leading example of the innovative use of advanced information systems in the K-12 classroom. The Living Schoolbook: Project Overview
Overview The Living Schoolbook Project is a prototype of the Education Information Infrastructure of the future. In collaboration with Syracuse University's School of Education, and a number of project partners, NPAC is using state-of-the-art information technologies to deliver video, images, and text to the classroom to prototype interactive, information-on-demand systems and their integration into K-12 curricula. Advanced Information Systems The Living Schoolbook creates a unique learning environment enabling teachers and students to use multimedia-on-demand, supercomputers, parallel databases, and networking as educational resources. Three educational software applications have been developed using these technologies and are being made available to six schools across New York State:
an interactive journey of New York State,
    video-on-demand for the classroom, and
a digital library of Internet resources designed for kids.
Digital Libraries Kid's Web is a World Wide Web digital library for school kids, that is being developed as part of the Living Schoolbook. The project is the result of a "data mine" of the World Wide Web of resources to create a "Cached Internet" of resources (locally stored at NPAC) to support focused teacher selection of material and high performance delivery over NYNET. Selection of the material is conducted by teacher teams to provide high-value materials, efficiency in teacher preparation time and a focus on K-12 appropriate material. Plans are to implement searches that are supported by knowledge agents from a variety of sources. Selected Kid's Web material can also be made available by CD ROM to school sites with poor Internet access.
