My Lunch with Aryeh By Shira Dicker Lunchtime at the Jewish Theological Seminary on a weekday in late May. Inside the well-stocked cafeteria, students, faculty, staff and administrators mill about, choosing soup or salad, sandwiches or fresh fish. A happy cacophony fills the space, extending to the adjoining lunchroom, which is filled with talkative diners. At one table, a group of young men and women sit together, swaying toward the round table upon which rest several large volumes of Talmud. At another table, a group of visiting professors enjoy a private meal and conversation with Seminary faculty and administration. A family of four rabbinical school mother and her three small children occupy yet another table. Legs dangling from the chairs, the children munch on bagels and salad, sip juice and filch french fries from one another as their mother reads through her class notes. Because it is spring, the lunch scene spills outside into the gloriously sunny quadrangle where diners sit around small metal tables. Seated with me at one of these tables, taking note of the innumerable acts of Jewish education in progress, is Dr.

Understanding the Arts
Instructor(s): Denise Budd
Peter Conolly-Smith
A two-course curricular option for students wishing to develop their appreciation of art and literature. Both courses meet daily, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon.
What is Great Literature?
Peter Conolly-Smith Students attempt to answer this question by examining a number of literary works, seeking to determine what differentiates great literature from mere entertainment. They analyze one of Shakepeare's plays and examples of his poetry, as well as works by writers such as Keats, Shelley, Emerson. Poe, Melville, Whitman, Rimbaud, W. C. Williams, and Elizabeth Bishop. Through readings, class discussion, film, and short essays, students enhance their ability to write, speak, and think effectively about literature.
What is Art History?
Denise Budd This course introduces students to selected monuments of painting, sculpture, and architecture and to basic trends and concepts in the history of art. Examples are drawn from both Western and non-Western traditions. Students are introduced to aspects of visual analysis, historical context, and problems of interpretation. Participants engage in discussions centered around slide presentations, videos, and field trips to diverse New York museums.

Approaches to Reading and Writing
Instructor(s): Nicholas Boggs
Descha Daemgen
Shirin Khanmohamadi
Kieth Miller
A two-course curricular option for students interested in developing their ability to write an argumentative essay and sharpening their academic and critical reading skills in order to meet the demands of advanced study in high school and college. Each course meets daily, one in the morning, the other in the afternoon. Writing Expository Prose Descha Daemgen and Shirin Khanmohamadi The process of writing is emphasized as students learn to write through a "building block approach" which concentrates on how relatively simple meaning relationships and rhetorical strategies within an essay combine to yield intricate and sophisticated results. Attention is paid to developing skills in grammar, diction, usage, syntax, and punctuation. Critical Reading and Study Skills Nicholas Boggs and Keith Miller Analyzing fiction and nonfiction trains students to identify and critically respond to the messages conveyed by different kinds of writing. Emphasis is placed on understanding how formal characteristics such as rhetorical strategy, point of view, and diction condition the reader's perception of content. As students learn to read critically, they also acquire techniques for effective study and research. Study-skill sessions and tutorials teach practical skills in note-taking, outlining, reading textbooks, summarizing, preparing for examinations, managing time, and using research tools.

Field Office Highlights - New York The New York Field Office Community Outreach Program (NYO COP) was involved in several community programs during 1999 including appearances at Community and Senior Citizen Centers throughout New York's five boroughs, Long Island, and Westchester. Career seminars, health and safety events, street and community fairs, and individual precinct Community Councils were also visited. In addition, the NYO COP was represented at each of New York's five boroughs during National Night Out on August 3, 1999. This year's event will be held on August 1, 2000, and the New York Office will be fully represented.
Youth Programs
Once again this past year, tours of the New York Office were conducted for various youth groups including Boy Scouts, Explorers, and high school classes. The demonstration of how the New York Office Operations Center works during emergencies (such as the TWA Flight 800 crash and the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center) proved to be the highlight of the tours.
FBI programs were presented to youngsters through liaison with organizations such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Walks of Life. Walks of Life, which is run by the Greater New York Hospital Foundation, places an emphasis on introducing youngsters to the workplace early in their lives. This program has been proven to have a great impact on children who, at this point in their lives, are wavering between a productive lifestyle and that which is dangerous and unproductive.

A PARENT'S GUIDE TO CHILD CARE FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN
New York State
Cornell Cooperative Extension
If you're looking for high-quality child care for a school-age youngster, you probably have lots of questions. This brochure was designed to answer the most common questions that parents have about before- and after-school child care programs.

What Are the Choices for School-Age Care?
There are many programs in New York State that may offer child care for school-age children:
  • Day care centers
  • Family day care homes
  • Group family day care homes
  • Park and recreation departments
  • Public and private schools
  • Religious institutions
  • Summer youth camps
  • Youth groups (such as Ys, scouts, boys and girls clubs, Cooperative Extension)

Some of these programs may provide care for school-age youngsters only; others might add a school-age component to an existing child care program.
Basically, child care programs for school-age youth provide adult supervision and age-appropriate activities in the hours before and after school. Programs that are sensitive to the needs of employed parents also provide care during times that school is not in session, such as school holidays and vacations.

Is One Type of Child Care Better Than Another?

    http://www.nychesskids.com/files/about_us.htm
    About Us
    Who We Are
NyChessKids was organized by International Master Saudin Robovic to improve communication between educators, parents, and kids involved in scholastic chess. With interested in scholastic chess growing more every day around the country, NyChessKids is a resource for courses, camps, tournaments, media, and fun. What We Do
NyChessKids is an organization made up of the city's finest scholastic chess instructors, school coordinators, parents, and young players. Everyone involved with NYCK is encouraged to share their ideas on how to improve New York scholastic chess. School can start their own curriculum or after-school programs with the help of NYCK. Parents can publish articles on the web about their experiences and meet and talk with other chess parents easily through NYCK. Kids can introduce themselves and publish their games on the internet, as well as poetry and stories. Why Chess
Chess is one of the best games for school children who are ready for a new, fun challenge! Studies show that kids who play chess as a school activity score higher on standardized tests than kids who don't play chess. Better grades in math and reading could very likely come along with your child's next game! Exercising a child's skills for spatial geometry, visual memory, problem solving, logic, calculation, and sportsmanship in just one game often produces astounding results! From Chess in Education Research Summary by Robert Ferguson
" Why should we teach chess? What are the hard facts about chess and academic achievement? Chess has been proven to enhance creativity, concentration, critical thinking skills, memory, academic achievement, problem solving, cultural enrichment, intellectual maturity, self-esteem, standardized test scores, and a core of other qualities that every administrator, school board director, parent, and teacher desires."
