New Zealand or Aotearoa (ay-oh-tay-ah-row-ah) is home to the Tangata Whenua (people of the land), the Maori. It is widely believed that the Maoris originated from the tropical islands of Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. The Polynesians were master navigators, using the stars, the direction of sea birds in flight, cloud patterns and the color of the water as guides, they crossed the Pacific Ocean with canoes that had been built to withstand heavy seas and were able to carry many people and their possessions over great distances. There are many stories concerning how the Maoris first came to New Zealand. Some believed that there might be a dispute over land or a growing shortage of food as the population rose that forced some families to voyage off to the unknown. They then leave in their canoes for the east, knowing that there was land there because relatives have already headed in that direction and one canoe returned a few years later to describe it. After a few days at sea, a storm scatters the boats and in the morning, the leader finds his boat battered and alone. His first thought was to return home, so he heads towards the west. Unknown to him, the storm has carried his vessel so far off course that, in fact, he is sailing into an area with no islands for hundreds of miles. As days turns into into weeks, the helmsman becomes increasingly concerned. Already, they have used up most of their provisions, still, there is no sign of land. The sea remains dark blue, neither is there any patches of seaweed nor flights of birds to suggest landfall. The weather is also distinctly colder than they have ever known.

The e-mail, which appears to have originally surfaced in the first week of March in New Zealand, urged locals who didn't identify with conventional religions to tell census statisticians they were adherents of the Jedi religion, whose knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Star Wars movies. The e-mail suggested that just 8,000 of these responses would mean that New Zealand would have to declare Jedi an official religion after its March 6

The Hocken Library
The Hocken Library is one of the foremost historical research libraries in New Zealand. It was established in 1910 when Dr Thomas Morland Hocken gave his private collection to the University of Otago, in trust for the people of New Zealand. The Library collects widely in relation to the history and culture of New Zealand, the Pacific and Antarctica, and has a special emphasis on the regions of Otago and Southland. The research collections include: archives, manuscripts, books, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, periodicals, paintings, drawings, Photographs, music, and film. These collections are housed in secure stacks and can be consulted in the reading rooms and exhibition galleries at the Library. Top of page
Who was Dr Hocken?
The Hocken Library owes its existence to the vigorous collecting and subsequent generosity of a Dunedin doctor, Thomas Morland Hocken (1836-1910). Born in Lincolnshire, the son of a Wesleyan minister, Hocken qualified in medicine in 1856 and worked as a ship's surgeon between England and Australia until settling in Dunedin in 1862. As a doctor, and coroner for 22 years, T.M. Hocken became one of the city's best-known figures - 'a neat, dapper little man, with a short-clipped beard and dark lively eyes. Bustling, energetic, intensely industrious, he had a winning personality and infectious enthusiasm.'

New Zealand has a proud and diversified culture. Maori, European, African, Polynesian, Chinese . . . virtually any culture you can think of can be found in New Zealand. New Zealanders comes from such a wide background of mixed ancestry that in most cases, instead of identifying themselves from their ancestry, they simply refer to themselves as 'Kiwis'. This section however will focus on the Maori people, and their aspect New Zealand society. I am not an expert by any means in Maori culture, however, as a New Zealander, with some Maori blood, I feel very privledged and seek to share some of this culture with you.
The first 'settlers' to New Zealand were the Maori (pronounced Maa-or-eee). They arrived via many great ocean going canoes, and settled in many parts of the country. It is not known exactly WHEN the first Maori arrived in New Zealand, but estimates put the arrival around 900 years ago, a reletively short time period in relation to the rest of the worlds human history.
Their culture has survived through the years, and makes up an inherent part of New Zealand. No where can you go in the country without seeing a Maori placename, or marae (Maori meeting house) or carvings. Maori males were noteworthy for their honour, and for being great and proud warriors in times past. Today, that honour lives on, even in our national male sports teams, who will proudly do a 'Haka' challenge before they commence their games.

Print History is a new field concerned with all aspects of printing and publishing. It brings together the technological, economic, social and artistic factors that intervene between the writer and the printed text, in order to determine the extent to which print influences and is influenced by the culture it inhabits.
The University of Otago has a long tradition of bibliographical scholarship. Over the last five years the University has established itself as a centre for New Zealand Print Culture research, hosting a conference on print culture and collaborating on (1997). Research continues, focussing on a more comprehensive understanding of Otago print history as a basis for future regional studies. See publications
The current project aims to situate New Zealand's unique print history within global accounts of print culture. Specific topics include a history of the Otago Master Printers' Association and an examination of trade personnel and technological change in nineteenth-century Dunedin. See research
The Otago project, housed in the Department of English, includes Shef Rogers, Keith Maslen and Noel Waite.
