Total land area runs up to about 269,057 sq. kilometers (103,883 sq. mi) in two main islands - the North Island and South Island. Another smaller island is Stewart Island. New Zealand Presentation to the C.L. Herrick Society
    February 20, 2002
Denison Geology students, Meg Kinsella ('02) and Christine Dektor ('03) gave a slide presentation to the C. L. Herrick Society on February 20, 2002. They studied at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. With the great location of living in Dunedin, it afforded us the opportunity to explore the beautiful topography of the South Island. New Zealand brings images of Frost's Fire and Ice, Sojourner's Mars, and of course Tolkein's Middle Earth. It is land of otherworldly beauty and exotic terrain for most northern hemispherer's. This South Pacific country has much to offer geo and ecophiles through it's vastly diverse environments: glacier and alpine country, rainforest, tussock-land, rolling hills, thousands of miles of coastline, temperate forest, vast plains, geothermal hot spots, and active volcanoes. The People
    Conservation and Tramping
New Zealand has a reputation as a "green country," a title deserved in many respects, although it is mainly due to the fact that there just aren't heaps and heaps of Kiwi's to pollute their country. However, conservation is rampant (Tongariro National Park was the third national park in the world, Fjiordland National Park claims a sizeable chunk of the South Island) and many New Zealanders are active trampers. Tramping in the parks is one of the biggest draws to New Zealand, as there are so many amazing tramps that are different lengths, cover all kinds of territories, and are found virtually anywhere.

Membership of the Otago Branch of the NZGS could be an important first step in your career as a professional geographer. Membership entitles you to copies of The New Zealand Geographer and The New Zealand Journal of Geography, in which you may eventually seek to publish the results of your research. It can also provide you with a way into the New Zealand community of geographers. For more details, contact Katrina Richards The New Zealand Geographical Society is the professional body for geographers in New Zealand and has a branch at each of the six universities with a Department of Geography. The Otago Branch offers a programme of lectures and field trips to its members, and organises special events for high schools in southern New Zealand. The NZGS sends current copies of its publications to geographical societies across the world and, in return, receives copies of their publications. This exchange material is currently divided between the University of Canterbury and the University of Otago, where they are available for consultation. We have a listing of those journals held here.
