Australian and New Zealand History. http://www.jcu.edu.au/aff/history New communication technologies are greatly influencing modes of knowing and patterns of communication in the humanities. They are generating new questions and problems. The Electronic Journal of Australian and New Zealand History is a new forum for historians of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand who are using new technologies in research and teaching. It aims to encourage exploration and debate on how interactive multi-media might be used to represent the past in all its richness and complexity. Historiography is clearly evolving through the interplay of technology and established scholarly practice. But how? And by what criteria do we assess the worth of scholarship in the new media? EJANZH exploits the possibilities of new communication technologies to adress these and related questions. However, the journal does so in ways that complement the activities of established paper-based historical journals. EJANZH will consider for publication conventional research and review articles on all aspects of Australian and Aotearoan New Zealand history. The editors are especially keen receive submissions that for reasons of length or style cannot be accommodated by print journals.

Visitor Info Public Holidays Transport Guide to NZ Road Rules ... History The Maori arrival of the first settlers from their Polynesian homeland of Hawaiki about 1000 years ago has been celebrated in myth and legend. They came in great ocean-going sailing canoes over a period of many years, and the present-day tribes still trace their origins to the various canoes. They named the country Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud. Maori adapted well to the cooler climate and developed a culture of fishing, hunting and gathering, supplemented by some settled agriculture (notably of the kumara, or sweet potato, which they had carried from the islands). European Explorers
The first European to sight New Zealand was the Dutchman Abel Tasman in 1642. He did not land; several of his crew were killed in an encounter with Maori in Golden Bay, which he named Murderers' Bay, and he settled for charting part of the coast. The British navigator Captain James Cook was later commissioned to follow up on Tasman's discovery and attempt to find and chart the Great Southern Continent and claim it for Britain. On the first of three voyages, in 1769, he landed, first on the east coast of the North Island and later in numerous other places, receiving a number of different responses from the Maori who came to meet him. They were generally friendly and he traded for supplies, circumnavigated both main islands and mapped them with remarkable accuracy.

53. Bluff New Zealand History - An Overview

http://www.bluff.co.nz/history.html
Bluff history - an overview
Bluff was not a settlement until the arrival of Europeans but the area surrounding served a variety of functions for the Maori before European settlement. The main Maori settlement in the area which became known as Southland, was Ruapuke Island, which with its seven pas was the base of the paramount chief of the South Island, Tuhawaiki, otherwise known as 'King of the Bluff' or 'Bloody Jack'. Smaller Maori settlements were scattered along the Southland coast, including villages at Ocean Beach, Omaui and Oue on what is now known as the New River Estuary. The first European to settle at Bluff was James Spencer, a veteran of Waterloo. He arrived in 1823, aboard the 'St Micheal'. He left to return the following year and established a permanent home. Spencers settlement was one of the earliest in New Zealand - the first to survive to become a town. Bluff therefore has a longer history than any other town in New Zealand. In 1856 the town was surveyed by JT Thomson, who called it Bluff Town and named the streets after rivers in Ireland. That did not meet instant approval for he was ordered by the Superintendent of the Province, Captain Cargill, to change the name of the towns main street from Shannon to Gore street, to honour Governor Gore Brown, and to rename the town Campbelltown to honour the Governors wife who was a Campbell. The Governors word was law and the town was officially known as Campbelltown until march 1917 when the name of Bluff was officially adopted.

The country itself is as old as anywhere else on earth and as far as I know civilizations have been here ever since there were people on earth. The furthermost back were the Lemurian's who lived here before the land sank and the pacific ocean was formed. Later at the time of Atlantis other races visited and passed through as NZ was a trade point between the Americas and Africa. There is a history of red haired people, black skinned people and others. More recently came the Waitaha followed by the Maori down from other pacific islands. Of course the Maori almost totally wiped out the Waitaha, and a few survive today.
