BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... NEW ZEALAND At least 1,200 years ago, argonauts from Polynesia came to New Zealand. These Maori peoples are the country's indigenous population. Europeans first saw New Zealand in 1642 when the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman named it although he did not claim the land for his country. The British, however, did in 1769. In 1841, it was made a full colony of Britain. Though promises were made to the Maoris that they would retain possession of their lands, they were instead displaced by British newcomers and their growing settlements. The Maori population dwindled to such an alarming extent that by the 1890s, there were reportedly less than 50,000 of them left in the country. Recently, attempts have been made to redress the wrongs of the past and payments have been negotiated for lands taken without compensation. New Zealand enacted universal suffrage in 1893; shortly thereafter, fair labor practices were guaranteed by law along with pensions, medical care, and other social services that stand as proof of the country's enlightened status for the time. In 1907, the country became an independent member of the British Commonwealth.

Country Info New Zealand Introduction New Zealand General Data New Zealand Maps New Zealand Culture ... New Zealand Time and Date New Zealand History Back to Top The inhabitants of New Zealand at the time of Tasman’s visit were the Maori, who began settling the land about ad 1200. According to Maori oral history, Kupe, a Maori navigator, voyaged here in a catamaran-like vessel (a light boat with two parallel hulls) in the middle of the 10th century. He discovered that the islands were uninhabited. Several generations later, a fleet of oceangoing canoes is said to have left Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean to colonize New Zealand. The existence of Kupe and the colonization fleet are disputed today, but archaeological evidence shows that the settlers originated in the eastern islands of Polynesia as the legends relate. The early inhabitants hunted New Zealand’s abundant wildlife, including the moa, a wingless bird about 4 m (about 13 ft) tall that is now extinct. The Maori spread out along the coast and the rivers on both the main islands, although they were more numerous on North Island. No precise archaeological records exist of when and from where the first human inhabitants of New Zealand came; but it is generally agreed that Polynesians from eastern Polynesia in the central Pacific reached New Zealand more than 1,000 years ago, possibly by AD 800 or even earlier. There has been much speculation on how these people made the long ocean voyage. Polynesians are known to have sometimes set sail in search of new lands, their canoes well-provisioned with food and plants for cultivation, and it is likely that the discoverers of New Zealand were on such a voyage. Few canoes probably made the dangerous journey, but the people from even one of these large, double-hulled craft could have produced the Maori population that the Europeans encountered in New Zealand in the 17th and 18th centuries. With them they brought the dog and the rat and several plants, including the kumara (a variety of sweet potato), taro, and yam.

Australian and New Zealand Law and History Society The Australian and New Zealand Law and History Society was formed in 1993. It is an interdisciplinary group of scholars who share an interest in the connnections between law and history. The society grew out of the annual Law in History Conferences, which have been running since 1982. Members of the society include historians, lawyers, academics and others interested in the area. Most of the members live in Australia or New Zealand, but their areas of interest are not confined to the law in those places. The Society publishes a bulletin twice each year, which contains details of the annual conferences and meetings, and lists publications which members might find interesting. The current editor is Nancy Wright If you wish to join the Society, click here . For the email addresses of the members of the Society's Committee, click here The Society offers an annual prize for the best undergraduate essay on law and history presented at an Australian or New Zealand university. NZ aviation history has not always been well-documented. We invite you to update information in this section by sending email to the address at the bottom of the page. The first powered take-off in New Zealand is achieved on 31 March at Waitohi, near Temuka, when Richard Pearse flies his homebuilt craft 150 yards. His aircraft is powered by a two cylinder engine of his own design and construction. This is the sixth powered take-off in the world. (More about Richard Pearse George Bolt and friends RD Wraight and WM Angus form the Canterbury Aero Club, and become involved in gliding experiments from Christchurch's Cashmere Hills. On 5 February, brothers Leo and Vivian Walsh make the first successful controlled flight in a locally built Howard Wright biplane, with the plane rising to 60 feet and staying aloft to cover a distance of 400 yards. Joe Hammond, the first government-appointed pilot in New Zealand, flies over Auckland in a Bleriot monoplane to the awe of spectators at the Auckland Exhibition. JWH Scotland makes first long-distance flight, from Invercargill to Gore. He flies the 38 miles in 38 minutes. The brothers Leo and Vivian Walsh fly the first flying-boat on Auckland Harbour, and later form the New Zealand Flying School to train flying-boat pilots.
