    Boure Well Project
T he 2001 Corcoran / Roberts Peace Corps Partnership Project is the construction of a cemented drinking water well in Boure, Niger. The goal is to raise $3,000.00 to fund it's construction. Peace Corps Volunteer Rosalynn Frederick of Copake, New York, 1998 graduate of Ithaca College , proposed this project that we are funding. S ince 1983-84 Corcoran High School of Syracuse, New York, has annually funded a Peace Corps Partnership Project. Over the years we have raised aproximatly $100,000 and funded 18 partnerships, including the construction of 6 primary schools, 2 Wells, 2 Maternity Hospitals, and the first school for the blind in all of central Africa. T his year's project is the 18th funded through the efforts of the students of Corcoran High School and Roberts Elementary School. It is the 16th funded through the sale of student drawn notecards. I n addition to the annual publication of student drawn note cards, students participate in cross-cultural exchanges with the villagers, exchanging letters, photos, and artifacts. In the Spring, Corcoran students may be teaching about Niger's culture to the students at neighboring Roberts School. Mali Exploring Mali Africa Homepage Geographia Home A lthough it cannot compete with the major safari countries for sheer natural spectacle, Mali is a nation of unusual interest and charm. Like Egypt, Mali is a country that is intimately related to a great riverin this case, the Niger. In addition, Mali is the location of some of the continent's most interesting cultural sites. Legendary Timbuktu is located here, and in the center of the country is the magnificently dramatic Bandiagara escarpment, home to the fascinating culture of the Dogon. Mali, the largest country in West Africa, is bordered by seven other states: Algeria lies to the north and northeast, Niger to the east, Burkina Faso to the southeast and, with the Ivory Coast, to the south. On the west are Senegal and Mauritania. Mali is shaped a bit like a butterfly, leaning to the northwest, with a much smaller left than right wing. The larger northwestern region of the country, which extends into the Sahara, is almost entirely arid desert or semidesert. In the central region, known as the Sahel, life follows the Niger River's annual flood cycle, with high water between August and November. In the southwestern area, rainfall and rivers are more plentiful, and this region is marginally more lush than the rest of the country. Mali's single most important geographic feature is undoubtedly the great Niger River, which traverses both the Sahel and the southeastern section of the country. The Niger, like the Nile, is both a critical source of sustenance and a major transportation arteryand in this latter capacity it is an excellent venue for boat travel.

Safari . The word simply means "travel" in Swahili, but for many, it alludes to wonders first envisioned in childhood: sweeping savannas, big snarling cats, thundering herds of elephant and wildebeest. Like its meaning, the word roams the imagination, becoming other words and places, like serengeti, sahara , or Kilimanjaro . Safari crosses the landscape of the mind, until it finally merges with the name of the great continent itself, Africa. Geographia invites our readers to explore all the traditional African safari destinations, but the game parks and wildlife reserves are only the beginning of the adventure. The second largest continent on Earth, Africa contains more countries than any other. With a history of human habitation that begins with the oldest known ancestors of man, the continent's cultural wealth easily matches its natural attractions. Empires rose and fell in Africa thousands of years before the European powers began their protracted exploitation of the continent, and much pre-colonial culture remains intact.
