Richard Milhouse Nixon
By: Brandon K.
Richard Milhouse Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California in 1913. His father, Frank Nixon, had many failing businesses that took the family different places. His mother, Hannah Nixon, had two boys before Richard, both died young.
After high school, Nixon attended Duke University. He tried twice to become class president. Finally he succeeded. Soon after his college schooling, Nixon enrolled in the Navy. War broke out and he was sent to fight. He was stationed at Green Island however, he never saw any combat action. He was a ration-distributor. When discharged, he had acquired the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Soon after discharge he was "invited" into politics. His stance of anti-communism made him well-respected. Good in debates, Nixon was a shoe-in. Soon he began his political struggle. He challenged Voorhis for a district seat in the California House of Representatives. Astoundingly, he won.
After acquiring some political power, he decide to move up more. He soon set his sights on the US Senate. He defeated the expected senator: Ms. Douglas. Thereafter he wanted more; vice-president was the next goal.
He was voted in with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He went through many political high points, such as the Caracas Mob incident, where Nixon was taken hostage. The "Kitchen Debate", noted as a high point for Nixon, where he and the Russian leader discussed issues in a kitchen. With Eisenhower, he served two terms. Nixon's next goal was to become the President of the United States.

Richard M. Nixon Panel Addresses President’s Evolving Legacy
November 19, 2002
Edward Nixon T '52, brother of Richard Nixon and president of Nixon World Enterprises, a service company based in Washington State, speaks at the panel discussion. He continues to be heavily involved with both the Richard Nixon Foundation and the Nixon Presidential Library. Twenty-eight years after Richard M. Nixon ’37 resigned as president, a panel of Nixon experts, including his younger brother Edward, gathered at Duke Law on Nov. 14 to discuss his legacy at the School and the changes he wrought on the nation and the world.  With a room full of Duke Law alumni, students, faculty and guests looking on, panel members addressed some of the questions and criticisms left behind by the former president, who resigned in 1974 and died in 1994. David Lange, a professor of law at Duke who started his Law School career during the Nixon era, moderated the discussion of Nixon’s life and legacy, including his presidency, resignation among discussions of impeachment, and subsequent writings and public service. The panelists took a decidedly kind view of Nixon, who remains one of the nations most controversial presidents. Edward Nixon, who graduated from Duke University in 1952, shared his views on his brother’s early years at Duke as well as the presidency and Richard Nixon’s later years. The legacy of Richard Nixon, he said, is not entwined with questions of his portrait or presidential library, neither of which is housed at Duke. It resides in the minds of the people around the world, many of whom consider Nixon a far greater president than do Americans.

Yorba Linda is located in the northeast region of Orange County where the hills are lush and green after a spring rain. Best known to visitors as the birthplace of Richard Nixon with a museum and library namesake, the city also has a reputation for its love of horses with a over 100 miles of maintained horse trails and three state-of-the-art equestrian arenas. The nearby Chino Hills State Park also an unspoiled wilderness for riders. One of the city's great assets is Featherly Park which serves as a rest stop for bicyclists using the Santa Ana River Bicycle Trail that runs from the Orange/Riverside County line to the Pacific Ocean in Huntington Beach. The park features an amphitheater for summer evening campfire programs. Guided nature walks are available through the wilderness area. Open turf areas provide space for recreational activities and for younger visitors, there's one fully equipped playground enjoyment. The land on which Featherly Park was built was originally granted to Jose Antonio Yorba by the King of Spain. Jose's son, Don Bernardo, expanded the Rancho and it became the greatest ranchero of early California. He was known throughout the state for his wealth and hospitality.

On February 21, 1972, Richard M. Nixon arrived in China for an eight-day official visit. He was the first U.S. president to visit the People's Republic of China since its inception in 1949. The meeting between Nixon and Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai resulted in a pledge to expand cultural contacts between the two nations and plans to establish a permanent U.S. trade mission in China. In addition, the U.S. agreed to a gradual withdrawal of its troops from the island of Taiwan. The United States began to take an active interest in establishing political and economic ties with China in the nineteenth century. After Japan attempted to invade China in 1894-1895, Russia, France, Germany, and Great Britain sought to protect their interests in China by carving the nation into spheres of influence. The U.S., an important power in the Pacific as a consequence of its victory, in , in the Spanish-American War , attempted to prevent this division with the formulation, in 1899 and 1900, of what came to be known as the Open Door Policy. This policy proposed to ensure all nations equal trading privileges in China and to protect Chinese sovereignty.

President Gerald R. Ford's Remarks on Signing a Proclamation Granting Pardon to Richard Nixon
September 8, 1974 Listen to excerpts from the speech as delivered by President Ford in .wav format (file size 2.3 MB) Ladies and gentlemen: I have come to a decision which I felt I should tell you and all of my fellow American citizens, as soon as I was certain in my own mind and in my own conscience that it is the right thing to do. I have learned already in this office that the difficult decisions always come to this desk. I must admit that many of them do not look at all the same as the hypothetical questions that I have answered freely and perhaps too fast on previous occasions. My customary policy is to try and get all the facts and to consider the opinions of my countrymen and to take counsel with my most valued friends. But these seldom agree, and in the end, the decision is mine. To procrastinate, to agonize, and to wait for a more favorable turn of events that may never come or more compelling external pressures that may as well be wrong as right, is itself a decision of sorts and a weak and potentially dangerous course for a President to follow. I have promised to uphold the Constitution, to do what is right as God gives me to see the right, and to do the very best that I can for America.

President Nixon Biography Mrs. Nixon Biography Speeches and Quotes Mrs. Nixon Biography
Patricia Nixon, the wife of the 37 th President of the United States, was born in Ely, Nevada. Her mother, Kate Halberstadt Ryan, named her daughter Thelma Catherine. Her father, William Ryan, coming home past midnight from his work in the mines, learned of her birth and called her his "St. Patrick's babe in the morn." She was to be "Pat" to him always. Kate Halberstadt Ryan, born in Essen County, near Frankfurt, Germany, had come to the United States as a child of ten to visit an uncle who had no family. She fell in love with America and never returned to Germany. She was a widow with two children when she married William Ryan in 1909. Mrs. Nixon was the youngest of the three children born to them. Her brothers, William and Thomas Ryan, lived in California until their deaths in 1991 and 1997, respectively. Before Mrs. Nixon was a year old, Kate Ryan, whose first husband had been killed in a mining accident, persuaded William Ryan to give up mining. The family then moved from Nevada to California, settling on a small farm in Artesia, 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Today, the site of this home in Cerritos is the Pat Nixon Park. The future First Lady had a childhood with no luxuries except that of a warm and loving family. But this was shattered when her mother died in 1925. At the age of 13, Mrs. Nixon took over the household duties for her father and her brothers. Two years later, when she was attending Excelsior High School, her father became seriously ill and she cared for him, as she had her mother, until his death in 1930. She was then 18, a high school graduate and completely on her own.

79. Character Above All: Richard M. Nixon Essay
Essay provides a brief look at the circumstances and events that molded the president's character.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/character/essays/nixon.html
RICHARD M. NIXON
Excerpted from an essay by Tom Wicker Richard Nixon was an introvert in the extroverted calling of the politician. And as if that were not problem enough for him, he was an intellectual appealing to a public that puts low value on eggheads. I don't mean an intellectual in the stereotypical sense of a cloistered scholar; I mean that Nixon was a highly intelligent man who relied greatly on his own intelligence and that of others, who had a considerable capacity to read and understand technical papers, who retreated to a room alone and wrote in longhand on a yellow legal pad the gist of his major speeches, who impressed associates with his ability to evaluate disinterestedly the pros and cons of a problem, who in the opinion of Arthur Burns, whom he appointed to head the Federal Reserve, could have "held down a chair in political science or law in any of our major universities." Any number of Richard Nixon's associates will tell you that glad-handing and pressing the flesh did not come naturally or congenially to him. When closely observed, he always seemed somehow ill at ease. His gestures when he spoke the counting of points on the fingers, the arms upstretched in the victory sign or sweeping around his body like a matador flicking a cape before a bullthe body language always seemed a little out of sync with what he was saying, as if a sound track were running a little ahead of or behind its film.

80. He Was A Crook - By Hunter S. Thompson

http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/graffiti/crook.htm
From Rolling Stone, June 16, 1994
HE WAS A CROOK
by Hunter S. Thompson
MEMO FROM THE NATIONAL AFFAIRS DESK DATE: MAY 1, 1994 FROM: DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON SUBJECT: THE DEATH OF RICHARD NIXON: NOTES ON THE PASSING OF AN AMERICAN MONSTER.... HE WAS A LIAR AND A QUITTER, AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BURIED AT SEA.... BUT HE WAS, AFTER ALL, THE PRESIDENT. "And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird."
-Revelation 18:2 R ichard Nixon is gone now, and I am poorer for it. He was the real thing a political monster straight out of Grendel and a very dangerous enemy. He could shake your hand and stab you in the back at the same time. He lied to his friends and betrayed the trust of his family. Not even Gerald Ford, the unhappy ex-president who pardoned Nixon and kept him out of prison, was immune to the evil fallout. Ford, who believes strongly in Heaven and Hell, has told more than one of his celebrity golf partners that "I know I will go to hell, because I pardoned Richard Nixon."
