"Entries, written by experts in the specific ethnic group, reflect the diversity of Asian Americans. The articles are well documented and each includes a brief bibliography....Recommended for academic and public libraries." Choice
"[T]he Asian American population was the fastest growing minority from 1980 to 1990, increasing by almost 100 percent. Despite this fact, there are still relatively few reference works on this group. Here an excellent group of contributors document the lives of 166 distinguished Asian Americans, from scientists and Nobel prize winners like physicist Tsung Dao Lee to martial arts expert Bruce Lee and figure skater Michelle Kwan. Just the thing for most school, public, and college reference collections." Library Journal
Asian Americans have made significant contributions to American society. This reference work celebrates the contributions of 166 distinguished Asian Americans. Most people profiled are not featured in any other biographical collection of noted Asian Americans. The Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Filipino Americans, Korean Americans, South Asian Americans (from India and Pakistan), and Southeast Asian Americans (from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam) profiled in this work represent more than 75 fields of endeavor. From historical figures to figure skater Michelle Kwan, this work features both prominent and less familiar individuals who have made significant contributions in their fields. A number of the contemporary subjects have given exclusive interviews for this work.

    Collective Biographies of Women
Katherine T. Bucher and M. Lee Manning Collective biographies of women provide young adults with descriptions of the lives of women, serve as valuable informational resources, and offer considerable reading enjoyment. As the name implies, collective biographies of women are collections of biographies of women that tell about their lives, frustrations, obstacles, and achievements. These books have the potential for adding new perspectives to young adults' learning and reading pleasure. In order for this to happen, educators and library media specialists must be aware of appropriate titles of collective biographies, know specific evaluation and selection criteria, and provide young adults with access to the best books available. Evaluating Collective Biographies of Women Just as with all young adult literature, proper selection and evaluation of collective biographies of women are absolute essentials. Professionals need guidelines to assist in the balance of standards for literary and other qualities with collection demands and available resources ( Betz-Zall, 1993

Nearly every triumph, tragedy and change that took place in the turbulent twentieth century can be traced to the actions and convictions of individuals. This landmark 5-volume set examines the lives of 483 twentieth century world leaders from ninety-eight countries. Students will be exposed to such towering figures as George S. Patton, Adolf Hitler, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as lesser-known yet pivotal leaders like Irish revolutionary Eamon de Valera, Pope Pius XI and Golda Meir, prime minister of Israel. Well-written and objective, this reference set includes more than 1,100 black-and-white photographs to help tell the remarkable story of the past century through the deeds of extraordinary people. It is an invaluable aid in helping students understand the colossal events of the last hundred years. Arrangement All five volumes are alphabetically arranged in traditional encyclopedic format, making this set an easy-to-use reference tool. Each volume is 352 pages long and the individual entries range between 750 and 1,250 words in length. Each volume contains the comprehensive index for the entire set. Volume 5 also contains an appendix essay, "Governments and Leaders," which follows the final entry in Volume 5. Written by editor John Powell, this panoramic overview of leadership in the twentieth century is divided into two parts "Types of Government" and "Political Leaders and Types of Government."
