How to Find Books in the Catalog
To locate books, search VICTORWeb , the UM Libraries' online catalog. A"Name Search" retrieves both books by a person and books about a person. If you are looking for chapters or articles by a scientist in books edited by someone else, you MAY find them by using the Word search. You WON'T find them by using the Name search. The keyword search will locate words and terms when they appear in the title, subject headings or notes of a record. The terms "history," "science" or "medicine" will retrieve many records, so be sure to limit your search by adding additional terms such as biography or bibliography or women, by time period or country, etc. or otherwise narrowing the scope of your search. Examples of words and terms you may wish to use to retrieve books on the subject of the history of science, technology and medicine, are:

What you need to know to increase your through-the-mail success By Al Hollinquist
It's a generally accepted fact that the most important element of through-the-mail autograph collecting is a sincere request letter usually no more than one page. Some may not think so, but the people who've had success over time will probably agree.
Since most letters will at first be going to individuals you like and admire, you'll have no trouble with this. But as your collection grows, you'll probably want to add people who've been involved in historical events and held positions of prominence.
For example, if you're collecting as many U.S. senators as possible, you'll have to write to some you may not agree with politically. With practice you'll learn how to give sincere-sounding (if at times backhanded) compliments.

    Reference Tools
This module will introduce you to some of the basic reference tools to help you with general research on a wide variety of topics. Once you have finished with this module, you will:
    • Be familiar with the different types of reference tools such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs, atlases, etc.
    • Know how to locate both print and electronic reference tools.
    Reference Tools: Introduction
    Definition:
    • Reference tools (dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc.) are sources of information that provide facts and figures in an easy-to-find format (alphabetical, topical, or chronological). Unlike "regular" books, reference resources are not designed to be read from beginning to end. They are designed to provide easy access to specific information so a person can quickly find the answer to a question they have.
    Uses:
    • Reference tools provide:
Background information Pointers to other sources of information (in their bibliographies)
      Formats:
      • Reference resources can be in many formats such as book, database, webpage, cdrom, etc. Electronic reference resources such as the online version of Encyclopedia Britannica are becoming especially popular although many people still find print versions easier to use.

Introduction Retrospective or General Biographical Sources Biographical Sources for Living Persons Reference Sources for Biographical Information ... Strategies for Finding Biographical Sources on DELCAT
    Introduction
Thousands of sources in the Library and on the Internet may contain biographical information. This guide provides citations or links to many of them. By using some recommended search strategies on DELCAT you should be able to ferret out additional sources not listed here. Determining the appropriate biographical source involves first asking yourself three questions. These are:
    • "Is the person alive or dead?" "Is the person American or not?" "Is the person noted in a particular place or profession, or of a particular ethnicity or gender?"
Depending on your answer to the first question, proceed either to the section in this guide covering biographical sources which are retrospective or general in scope (these include persons of all historical periods, including the present, or those who are dead) or to the section covering sources which are contemporary in scope (these include only living persons). Upon arriving at your jumping-off point, be prepared to ask yourself the second and third questions.
