Publication Date: Wednesday Nov 1, 1995 Biotech breakthroughs Stanford's Arthur Kornberg writes about the marriage of academia and business in one industry The Golden Helix: Inside Biotech Ventures, by Arthur Kornberg; University Science Books; 287 pp.; $28.50 by Anne Sturmthal Bergman In the 1990s, funds for basic research at universities are being cut, while medicine itself is in a painful transition as a business. At the same time, there has been a confluence of work in biology, chemistry and genetics that has given rise to an entirely new area of business meeting medicine: the biotechnology industry. Many of the biotech pioneers, who have ventured outside academia, are on the Midpeninsula. Three of them from Stanford banded together to create one of the new biotech companies, DNAX, and one of them, Arthur Kornberg, has now written a book that provides an inside look at the young biotech industry. Kornberg, Paul Berg and Charles Yanosky all teach at Stanford, although Kornberg is now an emeritus professor. Both Kornberg and Berg are Nobel prize winners. The vision of the three scientists was to try to create a marriage between the disparate cultures of chemistry and biology as well as academic science and business.
