Expert Opinion Imagine if you will that you have a little plumbing problem at home - a clogged toilet. You work on it for a while with a plunger, perhaps even going so far as to run a snake through the offending unit if you possess sufficient plumbing savvy. But no luck - the thing remains clogged. What do you do? Call a plumber of course. However, being the wise individual that you are (I must assume some level of wisdom since you are currently reading this column), you decide to not just call AAA Plumbers because they were the first in the phone book, but you call up several, and have them all come out to your home to propose just how they will solve your toilet problem. Then you will have several solutions to choose from. Good idea. The first plumber arrives, trudges into the bathroom, peers into the non-flushing bowl, and then opens up her toolbox. You are standing there, peering over her shoulder, and much to your surprise, you see that within the tool box is a single hammer - the rubber mallet variety. You ask, "Is that the only tool that you have?"

The Dilbert Future: Thriving on Stupidity in the 21st Century
by Scott Adams
HarperCollins, 1997, 258 pages, paperback Everyone's favorite cubicle-dwelling, long-suffering, comic strip character, along with his ever-present sidekicks Dogbert, Ratbert, Wally, and the pointy-haired boss, help illustrate this look into the near future as only Scott Adams can give it to us. A laugh riot for the first 13 chapters, Adams peers into his crystal ball (and who can say how cloudy it really is?), telling us of the growing dichotomy between "Induhviduals" and those of us smart enough to actually read this book. He covers the gamut of world-shaking (and not-so-important) changes on the way, including a great deal of technological predictions (such as that future life will not be like Star Trek ) and the possibility of life on other planets, or in Europe. Lavishly illustrated with old Dilbert comic strips, the book is by turns hilarious and frightening, but always mentally stimulating. The fourteenth, and last, chapter, however, Adams dedicates to a very odd view of the future which will probably make you think. He consciously stops telling jokes (and "Real Story"s, and "Made-Up Story"s) in Chapter 13, and turns here to an attempt to completely alter your perceptions of how reality works. In some places, he got me thinking about it. I wonder if I would have included the last chapter in the same book if I had written it, but this is how it stands, and it's a very entertaining, and somewhat thought-provoking, read.

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
The MFA in Creative Writing is a three year studio/academic program for students who have shown talent in the writing of fiction, poetry, or literary non-fiction. The program accepts a maximum of 8 students each year, so workshops are small and faculty members work closely with students, providing an unusual degree of both formal and informal mentoring. In addition to workshops in fiction, poetry, and literary non-fiction, faculty teach literature courses in contemporary fiction, poetry, and literary non-fiction. Our Visiting Writers Series brings numerous writers to campus for readings and meetings with students. The English Department is also home to the literary journal, Crab Orchard Review , and a limited number of internships with the journal, and with the Writing Baseball, the SIU Press Series , are available. Nearly all students accepted into the MFA Program are awarded financial aid (in the form of teaching assistantships) as well as tuition remission. The university offers excellent support services for students with disabilities and for non-traditional students, and the campus is exceptionally wheelchair-accessible.

The Literary Alchemist
An Interview with Michael Swanwick
by Nick Gevers INTRODUCTION Since his first short story appeared about twenty years ago, Michael Swanwick has been one of American SF's most stylish and subversive writers, bringing to his intense, finely wrought stories and novels a sardonic intelligence that has few literary peers. His output is spare: he publishes relatively infrequently, averaging one novel every three years, and all of his works share an economy of length that only serves to emphasize how compressedly rich a volume of symbolic and speculative material each of them contains. To open a Swanwick text is to broach an aesthetic Pandora's box: fascination and disturbance inevitably and rewardingly follow. As a novelist, Swanwick showed his gifts quickly. Although In the Drift (1985), a portrait of an America rendered savage and strange by nuclear meltdown, is somewhat loose structurally, it is highly atmospheric; Vacuum Flowers (1987) is a bravura exercise in cyberpunk-tinged space opera, delineating a colonized Solar System of infectious energy and great danger.
