Farley Mowat
by Joe Shepstone
Volume 20 Number 6
1992 November
Have lunch with one of Canada 's most famous authors for both adults and children, join in the conversation on writing and story-telling, and get a taste of his newest book, My Father's Son. We met in a small cafe in downtown Toronto, about a block from Union Stationand I can now say that I've done "the lunch thing" with Farley Mowat. You may not be impressed, but I sure was, because, you see, I grew up with Mutt, the Owls, Happy Adventure , and the wolves. Meeting the man who had actually lived (and written about) all these stories was exciting. We ate lunch and talked about families (he and Claire split their year between a farm in Cape Breton and Port Hope, Ontario); about dogs (two of their dogs "perished" (his word, not mine) last year; they now have just the one); and about writing (specifically, his new book, My Father's Son My Father's Son is Mowat's thirty-first book and his third look back at World War II, following and And No Birds Sang and The Regiment . The book is a collection of letters written from 1943 to 1945 between Farley and his parents, Angus and Helen.

64. Ian Heydon - Creative Writing, Fiction And Non-Fiction Author Of Children And Ad
Ian Heydon Creative writing, Fiction And non-fiction Author OfChildrens And Adults Books, Travel Guides And Travel Web Sites.
http://www.ianheydon.com/
Welcome to the Ian Heydon web site. After two decades of scribbling jokes and other stuff for radio and television in Australia, picking up a few awards and a reasonable living along the way, Ian relocated to Vanuatu for a year when his wife, Annie, was offered a job teaching at Port Vila International School. That year turned into three – a rewarding challenge for Annie, an adventure for the children, James and Laura, and the opportunity for Ian to write those backburner novels that looked like they’d never be written. He also continued to write about travel and, after two years in the tropics, returned to Australia to rediscover the country through the eyes of a tourist. That journey resulted in The Small Guide to A Big Country (to be published by Explore Australia Publishing in 2003). The ‘sabbatical’ also produced three crime novels , two creative writing texts, a novel for young adults , a children’s picture book, a bunch of web sites and a few songs Ian returns to Australia in 2003, to settle in South East Queensland and to edit/revise the above before swamping potential publishers.

65. Ian Heydon - Creative Writing, Fiction And Non-Fiction Author Of Children And Ad
Ian Heydon Creative writing, Fiction And non-fiction Author Of Childrens And AdultsBooks, Travel Guides And Travel Web Sites. non-fiction.Creative writing
http://www.ianheydon.com/creative.html
Non-Fiction.Creative Writing These two books came from a happy coincidence. For five years Ian was a guest lecturer in radio comedy at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney. He took the post initially because he had failed to gain entry to a course some 15 years before because of lack of experience. He liked the irony, but also found that he liked the work. Always appearing ‘unprepared’ he worked with students to ‘unblank’ the page and draw on their own creativity. He sees himself as a facilitator and communicator rather than a teacher and believes that writing is a craft that can be honed but not taught. In Port Vila, he took a creative writing extension group of students (aged 10 – 12) at Port Vila International School once a week and the book, The Scribe Tribe , charts their (and his) 12-week journey, has samples of their writing and contains lesson plans and writing tips. It’s also the story of one girl who, until now, had been pigeonholed as ‘sporty’ and ‘non academic’ because of her inability to spell. For example, when asked to write some sounds that can be heard in Port Vila, she wrote:
    Sacaters in my ears (cicadas)
The levas in the trees (leaves)
    The wind wisiling (whistling)
Saind flying in the air (sand)
Sea splaching agenst serfbords (splashing, against, surfboards)

Hi. I'm children's author Maryann Weidt (pronounced white). Most of the books I've written are biographies. They're about people I'd heard of and wanted to know more about. Sometimes I write picture books, too. Well, I've written and published one picture book. But I think it's a very special one. It's called Daddy Played Music for the Cows. I hope you like it. In fact, I hope you like all my books. Thanks for stopping by my website. Take your time and look around. If I can help you with anything, please let me know. 68. The INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP
Join various mailing list workshops such as poetry, fiction, flash fiction, romance, novels, and nonfiction. Post and receive critiques of work, plus critique other works. Discuss the finer points of writing.
http://www.manistee.com/~lkraus/workshop/index.html
Internet Writing Workshop WHAT IS THE INTERNET WRITING WORKSHOP? The Writing Workshop exists for two primary purposes:
  - To create an environment where Works In Progress can be passed around and critiqued, to help us improve these works and to improve as writers.
  - To give people interested in writing professionally a support group  where information can be shared and various aspects of writing can be discussed.
The Workshop is open to all styles and genres of writing:  literary fiction, genre fiction, poetry, children's writing, essays, newspaper articles, scripts, you name it.  Members do not need to be published writers, only to be serious about writing and about wanting to improve.
Because these are workshops, membership is restricted to participating members.  Group or anonymous memberships are not allowed.
The key word in the Writing Workshop is "Workshop".  Every member is expected to take an active part in the proceedings.  We are here to become better writers, not to watch each other.  If you don't take an active part in these lists, you will be dropped from the membership.
Works are submitted for criticism only.  Submission is not considered  publication.  The fact that the list membership consists of active,  participating *writers* acts to support this consideration.

The Flash Fiction Writing Workshop (free)is for serious writers of short short pieces (beginner to more advanced, but serious). All members share one goalto improve in the craft of writing.
The length limit for pieces submitted for critique is around 500 words, more or less, but nothing over 1,000 words.
Participation is mandatory . The minimum requirements to remain in the workshop are to submit one piece of your own each month and do four critiques for others. Those who are not able to meet these minimum requirements will be unsubscribed. We have no upper limit, however, on the number of critiques you can do for others. The more you do the more you learn about writing (by trying hard to understand and express what makes a piece effective or not effective).
In addition to critiquing each other's work, we will also discuss writing theory, try exercises, share markets, and share our publishing successes.
You must be over 18 to join and must use your real name (no aliases or pseudonyms allowed).
