The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank School system serves nearly 6,300 students on 11 campuses (eight elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one alternative school). The Governor has recognized the system with the 1995 Most Outstanding Entrepreneurial Schools Award for its commitment to innovative teaching and shared decision making. Each school has a comprehensive improvement plan that emphasises helping students succeed. The Camden County School System serves approximately 1200 students on three campuses (a primary, middle, and high school). The schools encourage parental support and value community involvement, which along with a highly trained and dedicated staff, are the cornerstone of Camden's successful educational program. The Albemarle School is a private institution offering pre-school through 12th grade with an emphasis on scholastic excellence. There are also several Christian schools in the area. The College of the Albemarle is a public two-year community college which serves educational needs as diverse as the residents and businesses in the college's seven-county service area. North Carolina's first community college, it offers comprehensive quality college transfer, technical, and vocational programs. Elizabeth City State University is part of the University of North Carolina system. Its instructional programs are offered through thirteen academic departments, a general studies division, and a special programs office. The Graduate and Continuing Education Center offers master's level study through cooperative inter institutional arrangements; its Weekend College fills a gap for working students.

Is there life after death in higher education? What happens
to America's very-worst professors and college administrators - not
those who either don't know their subjects or just can't get their
knowledge across to students, but those who actively cheat in some
way in research or funding?
Dr. Arnold Rincover's case shows that seemingly no disgraced professor lacks a possible comeback. Rincover - who specialized in the study of autism and was a child psychologist - was teaching at the nearby University of North Carolina at Greensboro, until he was forced to leave in the early 80s in a scandal. Rincover's scandal actually made the area "mainstream" daily at the time. Later, he was mentioned - along with two other researchers - in an article about research fraud. In his case, it meant falsifying the claimed results of his research in order to keep grant money coming in.

All were sent to elementary and middle schools in that area. Jay's other mail torecipients other than schools, however, didn't threaten anyone in any way.

The balkanization of America is now official. Beyond the
reconquista movement of regions of the Southwest near Mexico that
are largely Hispanic, balkanization along ethnic lines moved boldly
into the federal government itself last week.
Last Friday, a variety of Arab-American groups boasted that
the FBI now had established an "Arab American advisory committee."
The committee was set up following discussions between various
Arab-lobby groups and the FBI's Washington field office. It was set up in Washington due to the large Arab-American and Arab alien community in that area - numbering about 70,000. The appointment to this committee of James Zogby - head and founder of the Arab American Institute - only raises more troubling questions. For instance, AAI this spring has been pushing for the ouster of local congressman Howard Coble from a terrorism committee for his implicit suggestion that interning Arab aliens might be a needed thing if terrorism continued.

    About
Current Awareness is a monthly bibliography of the most recent educational literature from an extensive collection of journals. This service is provided to you by the Division of Instructional Technology, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in partnership with The Landmark Project. Current Awareness has identified over 200 education and technology related topics of interest to educators. Each month staff with the Department's Education Information Center reviews newly arived journals and other materials, matching articles with education and technology topics. These topics are linked to short citations for the articles so that educators can easily find the information on their topic of interest. As you find citations that interest you, contact either your school system's professional library or local community college/university library for the full text of the article. History The Current Awareness Program was instituted nearly ten years ago by the by forward thinking members of the Division of Instructional Technology at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. It was a paper-based service that helped keep agency employees abreast of issues related to their jobs and services. With the establishment of the Department's web site, The InfoWeb, this service was extended to the Internet for use by North Carolina Educators.
