A Sponsor Profile:
Consortium of Innovative Boarding Schools
    Another one of our pioneering sponsors is the Consortium of Innovative Boarding Schools. These schools are one of the best kept and most exciting secrets, one which we are about to share with you. There are thousands of educational alternatives in this country, but most of them are day schools and programs. But there are a handful which take boarding students. They are great schools, available to all students, not expensive, and give their students real responsibility and decision-making power. The schools represent the whole age range, and widespread locations. If you are looking for a residential school which your kids will love, contact these schools directly, or call our 800 number for more information. The schools are:
    • Arthur Morgan School ( ams@yancey.main.nc.us ), in Burnsville, North Carolina, a Quaker School which is a junior high age program; Horizons School, in Atlanta, Geargia ( horizons@earthlink.com ), which takes a wide age range of students and has an international program; The Meeting School , in Rindge, New Hampshire which is a Quaker School for high school aged students;

As an historian trained in ethnography, I'm interested in understanding how and why Indian people especially on the Southern Plains have adapted to change in order to maintain important cultural values and practices. My recent publications include works on boarding schools, powwow culture, and Christian missions. I have just completed a book-length ethnography of Christian missions at the Kiowa-Comanche Reservation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to be published by the University of Nebraska Press in the fall of 2001, and am currently at work on an ethnography of Southern Plains powwow culture for the University Press of Kansas. SUBSCRIPTION SCHOOLS
           In the more populous areas, families during the colonial period had combined to pay the salary of the minister or some lay reader sent out by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel to instruct their children for several months during the year. Out of this custom arose the subscription school, so widely known in antebellum North Carolina as the "old-field school." A parent, wishing to obtain instruction for his own children, might employ a teacher, provide a room or a building for the school, and take it upon himself to solicit pupils from other families to help defray the expense. In 1838 A. J. N. Hall of Oxford advertised in the Raleigh Register as follows: "The Subscriber, having engaged a Teacher to instruct his own children, begs leave to inform the public that he is ready to take in a select number of boarders at the moderate price of $6 per month, the Tuition fees being very moderate."

    - Not a Bad Idea
    Ted Rueter
    In 1994, Newt Gingrich suggested placing children of teen mothers in orphanages. If they could not support their children, the Republican Congressman said, "America should tell them, 'We'll help you with foster care. We'll help with orphanages. We'll help you with adoption.'" His suggestion was ridiculed. Syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman called orphanages "Dickensian institutions." Hillary Rodham Clinton said that "the idea of putting children into orphanages because their mothers couldn't find jobs" was "unbelievable and absurd." Remarkably, four years later, Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson put forth a similar proposal - to a very positive reaction. In his recent State of the State address, Mr. Carlson, a Republican, proposed to create three residential academies for at-risk kids. Each school would house from 50 to 75 students. He suggested a total budget of $12 million. The Minnesota state legislature, controlled by Democrats, appropriated Carlson's entire request. The schools will be open year-round, 24 hours a day. They're intended for 12- to 18-year-olds not yet in serious trouble, but whose parents either can't or won't take care of them. Possibilities include the chronic truant, the child diagnosed with behavioral and emotional difficulties, kids labeled incorrigible, children passed from one foster home to another.

    Charlotte Hawkins Brown
    "Well may we add to
    our modern culture and
    educational efficiency some
    of the fine manners of
    . . . bygone days." T he end of slavery in 1865 offered a new and challenging lifestyle for African Americans in North Carolina. Some became landowners, educators, politicians, and businessmen. Yet by 1900 "jubilation" had become "Jim Crow," and African Americans once again found themselves treated as second-class citizens. During this period, however, leaders emerged, who dedicated themselves to improving the status and quality of life for African Americans. One such person was Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown. In 1883, Lottie Hawkins was born in Henderson, North Carolina. Her family later moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she attended Allston Grammar School, Cambridge English High School, and Salem State Normal School. While she was a student at Salem, the American Missionary Association offered her a teaching position in North Carolina. Dissatisfied with the lack of educational opportunities for Negroes in the South, Hawkins accepted. The eighteen-year-old returned to North Carolina in 1901 to teach rural African American youth in Bethany Congregational Church in Sedalia, Guilford County. The school closed after one term, but young Hawkins decided to remain in the community and establish her own school. In 1902, after vigorously raising money in New England, Charlotte Hawkins founded Palmer Memorial Institute, a day and boarding school. Established in a converted blacksmith's shop, the school was named in honor of Alice Freeman Palmer, Charlotte's mentor and benefactor. Mrs. Palmer also was the second woman president of Wellesley College in Massachusetts.
