NORTH CAROLINA TEACHERS TUITION BENEFIT Certain teachers may become eligible to be charged the in-state tuition rate even if they do not qualify as residents for tuition purposes under G. S. 116-143.1. North Carolina teacher applicants may receive this benefit for courses “relevant to teacher certification or to professional development as a teacher” and must be approved by the principal of the teacher/applicant’s school. To qualify, an applicant must be a teacher or other person paid on the North Carolina teacher salary schedule incident to full-time employment by a North Carolina public school. “Full-time employment” means the employee’s duties qualify him/her for membership in the Teacher’s and State Employees’ Retirement System or would so qualify the employee if he/she were employed on a permanent basis. Applicants must qualify academically for admission to any school of UNC-CH. Additionally, to be eligible he of she must be a North Carolina legal resident (domiciliary) and must have established North Carolina domicile before the commencement of the approved course(s). He or she does not have to be a resident for tuition purposes as described in earlier sections.
