Teacher Licensure INTRODUCTION
The primary purpose of the Teacher Education Program at Winston-Salem State University is to prepare scholarly, thinking, competent teachers who are capable of developing independent thinkers and learners while maximizing the educational experiences of all children. The motto of the Winston-Salem State University Teacher Education Program reflects its primary goal and expected outcome: Recommendation for North Carolina Teacher Licensure It is the policy of the university that all students recommended for initial licensure comply with the regulations of the university for admission to teacher education, complete a teaching major, and meet the general and professional education requirements for teacher licensure, including three semester hours in an appropriate reading course. The licensing process verifies an individual's qualifications to perform specific professional services as a public school employee, and guarantees that educators in North Carolina meet standards of professional competence. North Carolina statues specify that all professional employees of public schools hold the appropriate license for the subject or grade level taught or for the professional assignment field.

In the wake of new local grade-promotion requirements and a statewide effort to end so-called "social promotion," Jacksonville Commons Middle held back 86 students last spring, more than any other Onslow County middle school. The battle for Morehead
Zade is just 7 years old, but he has studied violin at Morehead for three years and it shows. He skillfully maneuvers his bow across the strings, hitting every note perfectly. Parents say moments like this and the school's strong test scores are reasons Morehead should keep its 12-year-old performing arts magnet program. Guilford County Schools plans to move the program across town to Peeler Elementary in 2003, a move Morehead supporters say will destroy a success story that took 12 years to write. National News WASHINGTON - Bush signs bill to help at-risk children President Bush signed legislation yesterday that expands programs for at-risk children, and said his fiscal 2003 budget would contain $505 million to encourage adoption, reunite troubled families and find mentors for those with parents in prison.

That means that 12.7% of teachers in Orange County Schools are NBPTS certified, compared with 6% of teachers across the state. The NBPTS certification process measures a teacher’s practice against rigorous standards based on Five Core Propositions that define excellent teaching. It involves an extensive series of performance-based assessments, including teaching Portfolios, student work samples, videotapes, and thorough analyses of the candidate’s classroom teaching and student learning. A teacher seeking National Board certification must also complete written assessments which demonstrate subject-matter knowledge, as well as the teacher’s understanding of how to teach students. The process takes nearly a year to complete.

Teacher Certification Program
The Teacher Certification Program (TCP) has been developed by the North Carolina Christian School Association for the benefit of its member schools. The TCP provides objective standards for evaluating and recognizing faculty preparation and experience. The TCP also provides the assurance that Christian educators have examined the credentials of those applying for NCCSA certification. The TCP does not attempt to evaluate the spiritual characteristics of personnel, except to require that the employing school recommend the applicant and that he/she subscribes wholeheartedly to the NCCSA Statement of Faith. This service must not be misconstrued as a license to teach or to perform other duties in a Christian school. The TCP simply provides a uniform procedure for appraising educational standards. These following titles are available: Preschool Teacher, Kindergarten Teacher, Elementary Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Special Education Teacher, Counselor, Library Science, and Administrator. Titles are available in the following categories: Provisional, Professional, and Advanced Professional. Temporary certificates are also available in the Elementary Teacher and Secondary Teacher categories. The length of term for these certificates range from one to six years. NORTH CAROLINA - Home to National Board Certified Teachers!

National Board Certification, offered by the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), is a way to recognize the accomplished teaching that is occurring in North Carolina's classroom. The certification process is based on high and rigorous standards that evaluates teaching practice through performance-based assessments; the ultimate result is improved performance and achievement for North Carolina's students. National Board Certification was first offered in 1994, when eight North Carolina teachers received this important professional credential. The number of North Carolina teachers receiving the certification has grown dramatically since then; today equaling about 6 percent of North Carolina's teaching force. North Carolina has the highest number of National Board Certified Teachers in the nation, including the highest number of African American teachers. One out of 17 teachers in this state is a National Board Certified Teacher.
