Photo (left to right): Prof. Ezra Vogel, Robert Gallucci, Edward Baker, and Prof. Carter Eckert. by Christine Kim On May 8 and 9, 1998, the Korea Institute organized what may be the most extensive public education program examining the culture and society of North Korean held in the United States to date. Enabled by the support and co-sponsorship of the Department of Asian Art, Harvard University Art Museums, and of the newly inaugurated Asia Center, the two-day programs included a panel discussion on North Korean negotiating behavior, an exhibition of paintings by North Korean artists, and a full-day conference on the culture and identity of North Korean society. The panel discussion on North Korean negotiating behavior, the conference's kick-off event, drew upon the expertise of two redoubtable "North Korea hands": Robert L. Gallucci, former Special Envoy of the United State, who had played a critical role in averting the North Korean nuclear crisis, and Stephen Linton, a leader of humanitarian aid to North Korea. Comments were added by Alexandre Mansourov, a Post-doctoral Fellow of the Korea Institute who had resided in Pyongyang for many years while attending Kim Il Sung University, and Edward J. Baker, Associate Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute and the panel's moderator.

The climate had been mild about 3-4 million years ago in the Cenozoic Era(with the emergence of human beings on earth). It had provided the animals and plants favourable conditions for living. After thousands of years had passed, human beings were originated. The origination and development of human beings can be found with Pyongyang as the centre. The 29 kinds of fossilized bones of animals and primitive stone implements remained by primitive men were correspondent to about one million years ago.

"Axis of Evil" has often been dubbed a phrase of wild hyperbole, a throwback to the days of the two World Wars when it was everyday practice to demonize opponents in the worst manner. The Bush administration itself has implicitly acknowledged that the phrase was a mistaken attempt to capture the visionary rhetoric of Woodrow Wilson or Franklin Roosevelt; no administration official or spokesman has uttered the words since in public statements. ADVERTISEMENT To many, it seemed that North Korea's inclusion on President Bush's "list" was an incongruous addition; a rogue state that had not done anything to warrant it lately other than being a dictatorship on the current US administration's bad side. The following MSNBC reporting about North Korean gulags and other conditions inside the country may make those who questioned North Korean inclusion wonder how Iraq and Iran, even with numerous transgressions of their own, made it into the same class as North Korea.

ADVERTISEMENT North Korea is a very strange land. It is probably the closest approximation of Orwell's '1984' any country ever managed to achieve. North Korea has been completely closed to the outside world for many years. As a country North Korea doesn't have friends to speak of. The relationship with China is as good as it gets in terms of North Korea's diplomatic achievements. And that isn't saying much as China is getting increasingly impatient with Pyong Yang's constant demands for more and more support. North Korea is the generally recognised pain in the neck of the far east predominantly because they are believed to have some nuclear weapons . Ironically in 1997 the US, South Korea and Japan signed an agreement to

Controlling the news It has long been the strong belief of many Americans that their print and television media is subject to certain government oversight and, finally, control. Recently, a mid-level executive of one of the three major American television networks sent on over 1500 pages of memos from the corporate offices of his network in New York to the head of their television news division. These memos contain a multitude of instructions concerning the presentation of national and international news for the network’s viewers. Kennedy Center Publications, located at Brigham Young University, is looking for 2-3 native North Koreans to review the North Korea Culturgram and provide input about daily living patterns of people in the country. Culturgrams are four-page briefings that describe a country's background and society as well as its people's customs, courtesies and lifestyles. Currently available for more than 150 areas of the world, Culturgrams are used as an educational tool to intro duce American educators, students, library patrons, business professionals and others to cultures throughout the world. To participate in this project, potential reviewers must meet the following basic criteria:
  • Be either a native of North Korea who has not been away from the country for more than three years and who has continuing contact with individuals in the country, or
  • An individual who has lived in North Korea full-time for at least two of the last four years; and

ETHNICITY, CULTURE, AND LANGUAGE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY
In terms of ethnicity, the population of the Korean Peninsula is one of the world's most homogeneous. Descended from migratory groups who entered the Korean Peninsula from Siberia, Manchuria, and Inner Asia several thousands of years ago, the Korean people are distinguished from the neighboring populations of mainland Asia and Japan in terms of ethnicity, culture, and language, even though they share many cultural elements with these peoples. Since the establishment of the Han Chinese colonies in the northern Korean Peninsula 2,000 years ago, Koreans have been under the cultural influence of China. During the period of Japanese domination (1910-45), the colonial regime attempted to force Koreans to adopt the Japanese language and culture. Neither the long and pervasive Chinese influence nor the more coercive and short-lived Japanese attempts to make Koreans loyal subjects of the Japanese emperor, however, succeeded in eradicating their ethnic, cultural, and linguistic distinctiveness. The desire of the North Korean regime to preserve its version of Korean culture, including many traditional aspects such as food, dress, art, architecture, and folkways, is motivated in part by the historical experience of cultural domination by both the Chinese and the Japanese. Chuch'e ideology asserts Korea's cultural distinctiveness and creativity as well as the productive powers of the working masses. The ways in which

Young woman with a changgo, the most popular Korean instrument. The changgo, which is played with the palm of the hand and a thin stick, is an hourglass- shaped drum covered by skins of different thicknesses. Is is used in orchestral and ensemble music and as accompainment for vocals and instrumental musical solos. The instrument is sometimes also carried by dancers. THE KOREAN PENINSULA, located at the juncture of the northeast Asian continent and the Japanese archipelago, has been home to a culturally and linguistically distinct people for more than two millennia. The ancestors of modern Koreans are believed to have come from northeast and Inner Asia. Like their Japanese neighbors, they have been deeply influenced by Chinese civilization. The elite culture and social structure of traditional Korea, especially during the Chosn Dynasty (1392-1910) founded by General Yi Sng-gye, reflected neoConfucian norms (see The Origins of the Korean Nation , ch. 1). Despite centuries of Chinese cultural influence, an episode of Japanese colonialism (1910-45), division into United States and Soviet spheres after World War II (1939-45), and the Korean War (1950-53, known in North Korea as the Fatherland Liberation War), the Korean people have retained their ethnic and cultural distinctiveness. Indeed, cultural distinctiveness, autonomy, and creativity have become central themes in the North Korean regime's

CULTURE
Language Korean is a Ural-Altaic language. It is related to Japanese and remotely related to Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian, and Mongolian. Although dialects exist, the Korean spoken throughout the peninsula is mutually comprehensible. In the DPRK, the Korea alphabet (hangul) is used exclusively, unlike in the Republic of Korea where a combination of hangul and Chinese characters is used as the written language. Religion Korea's traditional religions are Buddhism and Shamanism. Christian missionaries arrived as early as the 16th century but it was not until the 19th century that they founded schools, hospitals, and other modern institutions throughout Korea. Major centers of 19th century missionary activity included Seoul and Pyongyang, and there was a relatively large Christian population in the north before 1945. Although religious groups exist in North Korea, most available evidence suggests that the government severely restricts religious activity.
